Was Stuck on Trail, Now Stuck in Garage

I would imagine it to be from the lift at 3". I've heard 2.75-3" is the max you would want to go in the front due to the limitations of the stock ifs on these trucks....one of those components being the cv, crapping out. If op is running a spacer lift I would have to advise against it.

Just got the old cvs out and gave Napa a call and they don't have any listings for 16 Tacoma axles. Napa only has 05-15 cvs, but isn't it the same axle from 05-17+?

 

Call Toyota and get part numbers.. if they're the same part numbers..

I'd be surprised if the CVs on the 3rd gen differs from the 2nd.

They have a new engine, a new transmission and a new differential in the 3rd gen. Good chance the CV joints might be different too.
