I'm down. Nothing like a good old roast. My story should be interesting as I've owned two of these trucks and they failed around the same mileage

I'm sure you can agree Toyota is capable of engineering a solution and it makes the truck very unpleasant to drive, not to mention seriously degrading any resale value. I believe it's a rear end issue but mine is extremely loud.

Can everyone got to the NHTSA website and file a complaint. That would help to get someone to look further into the issue.

My truck doesn't howl. You guys over exaggerate the shit out of the sound. It sounds like every other vehicle I've driven with a two piece driveshaft and lots of backlash.

You ought to hear a diff that's actually bad.

If we all got together and flooded that website with hundreds of complaints within a few days of each other it might get some attention. Otherwise, I have little faith in them because of staffing issues but enough squeaky wheels might get some attention.

With regards to why the rear diff is the likely cause, it seems that is the general consensus when techs look at it. I have had this issue twice in my life. The last time I heard that howling noise and continued to drive my truck the diff seized and I crashed the truck into a local service station. All was well though because the gas pumps stopped me.... So, yeah, I’m a bit unsettled with the noise.

As I have said many times before, if the truck is truly safe and this is not a diff then make the noise go away (while putting it in writing that all is well of course) and I’m a happy camper. But, the fact that this continues to go on essentially unaddressed is unsettling.

It's downright unpleasant to listen to plus likely an issue. I wish they used Dana Corp parts made with American steel instead of Taiwan crap. America has always made good steel. Seriously though I hope mine fails so they fix it. Mine has already been replaced once so replacing crap with crap is not a solution.

Mine is so loud it can be heard very easily on the interstate with the windows down and traffic everywhere. Hardly normal. My 1988 4runner with 327k miles makes 0 noise

I understand your frustration but I hope it doesn’t seize. A diff seizing can cause you to wreck and hurt yourself or someone else. I was just a kid driving an old noisy truck when mine seized. It was noticeably louder than the one I have now but was it really? These trucks are so much quieter now so any noise in the cab could be louder than we think. My third gen is far quieter than my second gen was. I’m not confident that a new diff would be the answer until they have the issue worked out. I would not want to be like many others on here and get a new diff that makes more noise than the last one. I just hope Toyota gets a fix soon, like so many of the rest of us. Hang in there!

My wife hates riding in mine because of the noise. Even my daughters who are clueless about cars want to know what the “whirring” is.

Cool, did your 4runner have a carrier bearing, 8.75" rear end with a locker and lots of backlash? (No.) I too can hear truck stuff when I roll down my windows.

I can hear it inside the truck with the windows up too. Also my 4runner is running 4.10 gears. Excessive backlash is not necessary when setting up a rear end. Obviously the 4runner has friggin carrier bearings wtf and no it has the 8 inch rear which is the size rear end in non OR trucks and automatics. Clearly you just want to antagonize people, or your okay with a company that rides on their name and walks all over their customers.

Wrong, zippy dipwad, I turn wrenches for a living so I kinda know when to worry about my truck. I could care less who made the truck. Point out the carrier bearing on your one piece CV driveshaft, I'll wait. LSD's and lockers always have more backlash than an open differential. Non OR's still have the same driveshaft, and some still have the same axle. Anyways, good luck with your broken truck.

How does your negative and snarky posts help us move forward? You say were overreacting. You're damn right we are it's a 40k truck or less. We're all working hard for that vehicle.

I expect differential whine on a vehicle with 100k. My 06 Xterra had that. That was expected at that mileage.

Not a brand new truck with 1200 or less. My fluid is black and cooked. Explain that one.

My posts are negative? I'm sorry, am I missing something here... Last I checked this was over 150 pages of people talking big about lawyering up over a noise you think you can hear if you listen to it at 55mph with your head under a blanket and all the lights off. It's pretty hilarious that I'm the negtive one. Get over yourselves.

Oh, do I have to explain my interest in a thread on a public forum to you? Hm. No. I don't.
