Question. On the 2nd diff when did the noise come back again? Around what mileage.

    Thanks

I know my rant carried on too long . I apologize. Aviation is whole new animal. The paperwork on a washer is crazy . $200,000 for a 5 bladed prop sounds crazy? Liability in a 2 cent washer a 10 cent bolt and a 10 cent nut at a hardware store turns to a $9 washer/bolt/nut after going to get anodized and treated . Then the paper trail on that washer/nut/bolt... signature of inspection before and after anodizing. Training the person at the office site facilitator on spotting defects or flaws after the anodized process finishes. Signing on minutes in a acid tank.etc. etc.... lol..

Imagine a differential failing on a rescue vehicle. California beach patrol used 2015 dbcb tacomas. I saw them in San Diego. Real life bay watch!!! Lol
Thanks for the patience. Again after all this crap... I love my truck.

Immediately. In fact I think it has been louder than the first, to the point I wish I they had not swapped it out.

San Diego Fire Rescue does use Tacomas for their lifeguard division. They're equipped as emergency vehicles. LAPD also uses them or 4rumners too. I couldn't imagine the liability if a underfilled differential caused a failure enroute to a call. When people hear the word Toyota they think of reliability and value that's not the case anymore.

Papertrail is what keeps people accountable. If the dealers ACTUALLY did their inspections on the PDI/PDS I wonder how many of us would be on here? If they woulda told me " usually they come low from the factory". Ok no biggie, I know how to fill a diff. 5 mins later fluid would be in. I'd be on my way.

It's the lack accountability and transparency that caused these failures in the first place.

I'd asked my dealer on truck #2 to check the fluid levels. They claim they did. Yet they cannot produce paperwork. I checked it myself and know it was LOW after the howl cane back.

Ha. As a kid I worked at many dealers. As a porter. Lol! 17 year old kid driving new cars around . I fricking loved it got to change my own oil on Saturday and detailed my car weekly. I would "PDI" cars on spot deliveries on Saturday or after service closed on weekdays. 9pm and a customer just bought a new Hyundai excel... go to parts with the serial # grab the radio, antenna, and floor mats . Plug radio in and screw antenna down . Install floor mats . Wash car! That's it ! Done ! out the door! after the salesman gave a quick walk through. Hyundai had a pin system that you could stick in to release the radio. Similar to pic shown. No pDI Sheet ever filled out..

I’m hoping we all get our trucks fixed. That path is so much easier and better for everyone. Best of luck to you.

Just bought a 2017 Tacoma TRD Offroad last Friday and noticed this howling. Is it even worth bothering going to the dealership to have them look at it or should I just deal with it, check the fluid level in the differential myself?

Take it to a independent shop that deals with Toyotas. Have them check the fluid level. No further work. Do a test ride and document the howl.

Toyota will most likely tell you it's " normal". Armed with the independent shop information goto Toyota.

Call corporate get a case number assigned with a manager.

Refernce this document to Toyota if they act " stupid" Shows 2nd Gen Tacomas had this issue also.

How many miles on your truck btw?

Mine started Howling at around 300 miles and only right about 54 MPH, closing in on 6000 miles and it's not much louder but the range has expanded to roughly 50 - 60. Depending on how loud yours is and if you can tolerate it should determine if you feel like going back to the dealer or not.

Mine started around 500 or so. Interesting because the last two trucks I had all seems well for the first few hundred miles. Then after 500 is when it becomes much more noticeable. 54 MPH is exactly where mine creates that high pitched whine.

Many gear manufactures actually suggest switching out oil at 500. I'm thinking that 75W85 is too light..

I'd highly recommend checking your rear diff fluid levels. Be interesting to see what you report. Please report back here.

They can't throw parts at it if it won't fix the problem.

Unfortunately it sounds like they don't know how to make the noise go away. They have been using the same third member design since the early 80's so my SWAG at this is that it would be a harmonics issue more than a bearing issue. The trucks have gotten MUCH quieter and refined over the years so the gear whine after break in is more noticeable than it ever has been in the past. If you crawl under a newer vehicle, there are a all sorts of dampers hanging off components to improve NVH compared to vehicles of years past.

When it gets loud enough that you can demonstrate it to a Toyota mechanic, please take it in and do so.

    1. You will get it documented in case there is a future fix or in case you have more severe issues later.
    2. The more complaints they receive, the less they will be able to ignore this issue.

True. I don't blame them but it'd be nice to get a unicorn diff that didn't whine.

I'm waiting on the TSB that was promised me by Toyota corporate...

My first diff didnt until almost 3k...

But I'm also sensitive to noises in my vehicles.

My Dad owned his own auto shop for 30 some odd years and driving with him seemed like a game of telling me what's wrong with my car...

So far I haven't driven around with him cause I'm slightly embarrassed my brand new truck howls this bad and I'm trying to solve it on my own.

If Toyota doesn't step up on this then I'll try and solve it with him (4.88 and 35s maybe...!).

Well my friend, I hate to be a a pessimist....and I hate even more to repeat myself, but....

This issue has been around since 2005. There has really been no fix. I would expect a future TSB towards appeasing people who can't live with the noise.

Now this isn't aimed at you, but it's aimed fast those who tend to read into posts the things they want to hear instead of what is actually being said. If you're that type of person, do me a favor and read this at least 3 timer - maybe out loud:

I have only heard the noise in a co -workers truck and I had to strain to to hear it....but I could hear it....

...I am not a diff expert.....but seeing as there a hundreds of thousands of 2005 - 2015 trucks howling and whining down the road, at what point does the third gen community do the following things:

    (1) Reach out to the second gen community and see if the previous TSB alleviated the noise or if there was no change.
    (2) Ask second gen owners who have noticed the noise how many miles they have on their trucks and if there have been any differential issues.
    (3) Share as much experience with second gen owners who have gone through this experience.
    (4) See if the second gen owners ever pinpointed a cause.

....Or we can continue with another 150 plus pages of venting. Yes, I get it's therapeutic, but you have a whole group of established owners who went through the howl/whine issue. You (not "you" but the royal "you") can either try to determine what the noise is, what the long term effects may be and what the fix could be, or you can complain.

I hate to sound like a broken record but the TDIClub forum should serve as an inspiration. Before dieselgate, HPFPs were grenading causing upwards of $10K damage to new cars. VW blamed it on the quality of diesel or outright claimed the owners had misfueled their cars.

The community did several things. They started an internal community database and they also put their most technical minds at finding what the issue was. They succeeded in pinpointing a flaw in the HPFP roller assembly design and educated their members on how to deal with VW.

While VW eventually began repairing cars in and out of warranty, they kept installing a HPFP prone to catastrophic failure. The community then began researching their owns fixes.

This community is 13 model years into a known noise in the differential. The cause has not been pin pointed by the community, and there has been no semblance of unity or cohesion. The long term effects of the noise have not been proven or disproven and anyone who tries to temper the venting is railed on. If anyone think the current MO is helpful, well then keep plugging away....

In the meantime, I've already reached out to second gen owners who have the noise.......some of which still own their cars and still have the noise. Others that sold their cars with XXXXX miles on them with the noise. All of the information they can provide would go a long way in filling in answering some of the speculation in this thread.
