Getting the stock head unit to 100 Watts continuous

How can I get the stock non jbl headunit in my 2014 to put out 100 Watts rms. That’s what the kickers that the previous owner put in my truck recommend. I’m just wondering because when I turn the volume all the way up it’s crystal ear and sounds good, but it’s not very loud. I can have a conversation without raising my voice too much louder than normal. These are the speakers

 

100W/channel? Not gonna happen. Most head units make little more than 15W/channel - if that. You can only do so much with 22 ga wires. You need to add an amp.

 

I’ve been looking at alpine power packs or a kenwood excelon. The power pack is about 45 Watts rms and the kenwood is 75 Watts rms. Is it a huge difference between that 30 Watts?

 

I had the alpine power pack and it worked great on my kicker speakers until i upgraded to a 5ch amp and its now getting 75X4 and its noticeable louder. If you want simplicity, go with the power pack. I tucked it above the glove box on the plastic with double sided 3m tape. Worked great for several years.

 

Huge is relative. Doubling the power gets you roughly 3 dB. So I'd expect a maybe 2 dB difference going from 45 to 75. I personally wouldn't consider that huge. That said, I always lean on the side of headroom faced with this sort of decision, and you aren't leaving any. In this situation I'm not sure it really matters as the difference will be barely perceptible at ~2 dB. I'd leave the decision to ease of install and cost. Actually no I wouldn't - I'd throw 300 W at each side . But given these 2 choices I'd go with the Alpine for ease of install and probably lower cost.

While we're at it though, let's do a little more math. Let's say you're getting 15W out of your stock head unit channels now. Using the above generalization and the Alpine, you'll see a 6 dB improvement in SPL. With the Kenwood maybe 8 dB. Is that going to meet your goals?

 

Thanks guys I ended up going with the power pack based on what you said plus some additional research. It should meet my expectations just fine. I just want to be able to hear my music on the freeway if I have my windows down.
