Did all 1st gens have an electronic VSS? I always thought the mechanical ODO's were cable driven.

Earlier ones were cable driven. Not sure of the year they changed over.

OP's cluster isn't considered cable driven, is it? My '98 which is the same year as his truck has the digital cluster with the tach and electronic VSS, but I believe he has the 5 lug due to the 2RZ engine he has.

You are right. Theres a motor controlling speed and odometer. the gear from motor to odometer broke loose. i guess when it comes in contact the odo works when it falls aside it doesnt. its a small plastic piece broken inside the keeps the gear in place.

Now is a good time to upgrade to the tach/digital speedometer.

You can upgrade to the newer ones pretty easily. I think it's basically plug and play.

    This guy has one.

EDIT: Oh wait I forgot you have a column shifter, I don't think it'll work in that case.
