Are you 4X4? Did you put in a Carrier Bearing Drop Kit? Did you get it aligned afterwards? Stock UCA's???

Could be the front diff CV shaft bearings. Does the whine go away in 4WD?

What is a carrier bearing? I'm in 2wd I haven't tried 4wd just yet. The kit did have a differential dropper in there:

-Differential Drop to keep those Constant Velocity Joint boots from tearing, and keeping those CV Joints from premature wear from the increased angle. We have installed other companies differential drops, and the spacers they include are too long, So we came up with the perfect spacer. When too large of a spacer is used, the differential mounting points have large factory washers that will hit the bushing mount on the differential- Causing metal to metal contact. We like to keep everything like it was designed- no noises, no squeaks, no problems. We use Grade 8 or higher Bolts, hardened Washers and flanged nuts for easy installation.

From what I read, the diff bearing whines only when lifted (likely due to the extra side load from an angled CV shaft). The wear could have been present for a long time, the symptoms just exposed now due to the lift. jstyle's truck is five years old.
Ah so a shop did the install. Most likely they would have installed everything that came in the package.

It's Toyota certified... Will I have any luck with taking it in and getting them to fix it?

    Thoughts???

    They will blame your lift.

Is it a high pitched whine?

The only reason I can think of that you should get a high pitched whine is if they drained gear oil for some reason and didn't refill it.

The needle bearing is a low pitched growl that sounds like mud tires humming. Putting the truck in 4x4 is one way to diagnose, but a really bad needle bearing will still make noise.

No it's a middle of the road whining sound. It only comes on at 45mph or so. The sound is the exact same in 4WD as it is in 2WD and the weird part is that it just happened about a week or two ago... I think.

Did the shop do any other service at the same time?

    Check your diff oil levels

Not that I'm aware of... Would it make noise with low fluid levels only above 45 though?

[EDIT] If I pull the fill plugs on both of the diff's will oil run out or will I be able to see if it's full by putting my fingers in there?

Either/ or. It should be pretty much right to the plug.

Could a wheel bearing that just happened to go bad, or a driveshaft carrier bearing going bad and exasperated by the 1" rear lift. Is the whine purely aural, or do you feel any shudder/vibration?
