He's not messing with any of the safety features in the ECU that would throw codes if / when something starts to go awry. If you did have a failure, flashing back to stock takes <5 mins (so long as you still have electrical working...). It will make your ECU look like you just did a reset, but in all honesty if I had a failure I would likely "try to resolve by disconnecting my battery terminal" prior to taking into the dealership. which would make their reading look the same as me flashing back (in terms of run time since cleared, etc.,)

I guess the question to ask @OVTune is, what is the AFR target and does it stay there the entire RPM range?

Transmission is another thing, you can't really monitor that other than temperatures.

Based on a post like this, this sort of thing is really not for you. Keep your truck stock and you will feel more at ease that any problems you encounter were not a possible result of your actions. Stay in the "bubble".

P.S. And I say that with respect of course. This tune isn't for everyone. There are legit folks there that just don't know or understand enough on what's going on here, and in all honesty, you shouldn't be flashing your ECU if you have no idea what's going on.

Educate yourself with plenty of Youtube media about this process, understand what the ECU does, what possible outcomes from ECU flashing, then begin contemplating this tune (or any tune for any vehicle).

But asking forum members to "settle your fears" is really not the best way to go about this.

    Good luck.

If anything catastrophic happens to the truck, I’ll remove the tune. No big deal. I’ve dug around on techstream. I think the only thing Toyota can see is “miles since DTC reset” which resets every time I flash it.

You can reset DTC by unplugging your battery.

People have been tuning cars and tweaking ECU's for what 20 years now? Unless you are tuning it yourself, and don't know what you are doing, and are very reckless, it's unlikely to cause an issue.

Maybe check in with some Mazda guys who've been running OV Tune stuff if you are really concerned... but really no reason to be.

I don't really know anything about it either and understand your concerns not wanting to chance a failure on a 40k truck but I'm going for it anyway as I can't stand the way it drives and getting rid of it isn't a option.
Everything else about the truck I love so if this tune makes this truck drive and behave more to my liking it will be so worth the risk which is probably low since OVT didn't set out to give us a race tune on the ragged edge but more of a modest gain with enhanced drive abilities.

I like to know this as well. Once vehicle warms up, it goes into closed loop? Shoot for certain AFR target based on load, RPM, temperature? Last time I tuned was Hondata S300 10 years ago, I'm sure things have advanced since.

A little off topic but sort of related. OVTune does a lot with Mazdas according to his website, so that's why I'm relating this here. I drove a customer's 2017 Mazda CX5 yesterday (bone stock), and could not believe how incredibly fast the transmission shifted. I had to step on the gas to get around someone and it instantly shifted down a gear, press harder and down another gear very quickly. If OVT can make our Tacomas shift half as fast as that bone stock boring ass soccer mom mid size SUV, then he wins at everything. Next time I have one I will try to take a quick video, its seriously impressive. Or maybe its just that the Tacoma's shifting is that horribly unimpressive.

I believe those are not torque converter transmissions, but rather dual clutch setups. Completely different animal.

If a torque converter transmission were programmed to quick shift like that, it would be quite dangerous on wet pavement and it would also feel very unrefined, like something is wrong with the transmission. It's just different architecture unfortunately.

But shift delays are actually on his radar, he is aware. Not sure if he has decrypted the ECU logic enough to be able to control it. And when he does, lots of testing has to take place for acceleration, deceleration, mid range throttle, high speed behavior, low speed behavior, etc etc. There is a lot involved, and I don't think he will be as quick to release to public as soon as a discovery is made without testing properly. Hence this is why his product is of quality, not a rush job.

I believe a lot of the problems we’re feeling at low speeds is the torque converter. I’ve been paying close attention to gear shift / torque converter lockup and came to realize, a lot of times I thought it was shifting was actually the torque converter locking / unlocking.

Immediately after your foot is off of the throttle, it unlocks. Not sure if this is normal or not, but it makes you think it upshifts.

Mazda's actually a bit known for making "driver's cars", sort of a poor-man's BMW version. I believe a lot of your experience is around the fact that Mazda works to make car people enjoy the driving experience.

That Mazda tranny is not a dual-clutch, but it does something different than your standard auto, it uses a torque converter AND clutch packs of some kind, some Mazda secret-ish sauce, to achieve those fast shifts. FWIW.

How does the calendar schedule work with OVTune? I am on the clock as of 30 minutes ago but haven't heard anything.

I had a dual clutch before. There’s nothing like it. It’s crazy.

Greatly improved throttle control is far and away the holy grail for M/T owners. Stock delay is terrible!

Awesome, I hate when I give gas and clutch and the RPMs haven't even begun to rise.
