Many RTT owners don't compare the economics of RTT's to ground tents. They compare the expense to a van, trailer, micro rv or a night's stay in a Holliday Inn Express. I could compare camping and the gear involved to staying home. It never occurs to me to judge how someone else spends their money on their recreational pursuits. I'm pleased to see them pre living a slice of their retirement. I have the basic CVT Mt. Shasta. It was $1,250. I think they are $1,500 or so now. With that said, the last time I went camping, I rode my bike and slept in a one person tent.

$800 plus the cost of bed bars. No issues, no problems. This "pic" is (respectfully) from a week of "camping" at the Outer Banks.

RTTs aren't my style. But I have done enough research on them to know their pricing and again, you're way off. Just because you've not used one, doesn't mean your info is bad.
I've got enough UL backpacking gear (that I DO use regularly) that cost me at least as much as a high end RTT. I don't need to shit on RTT owners because they don't backpack and enjoy the woods the way I do. And they don't slam me for not 'camping' on top of my truck.

Get what you want. Get what's within your budget. Then go STFU.

Some people don't enjoy the view like many of us! I ground tent camped and had a big snake show up! We fought and I won, but not the best way to wake up at 2am. I've never had any critter problems up high & dry. Yea ground is cheaper, but so is penny candy! You get what you pay for.

Good time to remember...never drink and blog :burp:

I was always to chicken chit to climb a tree so it didn't bother me not having a tree house. I did have allot of fun in barn lofts though. ;)

    Good stuff!
My RTT was way less than $3k. The way I look at it, the enjoyment I have gotten within the first few adventures with my RTT has already been worth what I spent on the tent. Everything from that point forward is all bonus.
I also regularly go backpacking. I don't keep track, but I'm sure I spent more on backpacking gear than what my RTT cost me.

There rtt is versatile and quick and convenient for overlanding style or Basecamp style trips. When overlanding and I used my ground tent it took significantly longer to set up and tear down, always ends up getting dirt and dust everywhere and fighting it into the bag, loosing stakes, bending stakes in shitty soils, etc. Animals, giant ass spiders, snakes etc... The rtt holds a mattress, no airmats or air mattresses or cots to mess with, and the sleeping bags and pillows stay in the tent, doesn't take space up in the can or the bag.

Good points. I have used my RTT where a traditional tent would not have worked. For example, the two spots pictured below. The first one, even though you can't tell in the picture, the entire ground was layered with sharp volcanic rocks. No way would a traditional tent have worked there. The second shot in the desert would have just been plain dirty with a traditional tent. At one point it got very windy. Without staking out some solid deadman anchors, an empty traditional tent would have blown away.

Additionally uneven ground is as simple as a log or rock under the tires, and if you have to batton down the hatches or get outta Dodge quickly your rtt can be packed up in mere minutes and driven off with, clothing, bedding etc still inside.
