3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

Let's go over the basics.

 

So, based on your expert post, I take it you fixed your howling noise and are now consulting for Toyota to remedy the rest?

 

Generally, worn out pinion bearings can create whirring noises at various speeds, be it may during deceleration and/or acceleration. If the pinion bearings are the problem, they create more of a whirring noise than a rumble because it turns several times faster than the carrier assembly.


OR.

If your gears are newly installed and still create a howling noise, double-check its preload and make sure that the teeth are properly aligned.

 

Did i say i was a " expert" no I didn't. I want answers as much as anybody does. My truck is parked and sitting outside my place as I don't want to risk any further damage.

Not sure why the attitude? Just trying to offer insight and possible causes.

 

Probable causes for the howling have been discussed ad nauseam.

 

And?

No solution right?

So let's keep the discussion going. If Toyota is not going to solve it then we will, right here on this thread.

Even if we have to repeat ourselves a hundred times.

 

Haha, not attitude here my friend. Many have had their diffs replaced and the noise comes back, so it ultimately stems from a manufacturing defect (if you can call it that). My best estimates on a fix would be once we start to see trucks out of warranty taking it to indy shops

 

We can discuss it all we want here. But until someone is willing to tear theirs apart or knows a mechanic at Toyota willing to experiment, we're all in the same boat.

I'm only at 10k miles so give me another 20k or so and I'll do it myself.

I'm just hoping there is a solution way before then. I'm no rear end expert and it might be like the blind leading the blind.

 

Understood. Interestingly enough some people have not experienced the noise at all on the TRD OR. So that makes it even intriguing. Seems like the offroads are effected more than the TRD Pros.

 

I've listened to some of the video clips some guys on here posted and I'd be pretty pissed too if my brand new 40k truck sounded like that. So I get it, but at this point I think everyone like me, who sees some activity in this post clicks on it thinking "today is the day, Toyota has fucking fixed it..." then you click and are disappointed haha

 

That could be, but could also be that there are a much greater # of off roads out there. Increasing the odds.

 

I have an appointment at an independent shop next week.

 

Not wanting to throw out anymore theories. But I'm told the TRDPRO uses a different leaf pack. Some speculate that causes the drive angle to change.

No need for us argue here people. We need to start pinpointing similarities here.

My first post to the thread, was to point out that the rear diff on these third gens is off the Hilux, which has been sold internationally for years.

Also, if it was a wear issue and the

$90 2005-2015 Toyota Tacoma With 4L Right Petrol intake air snorkel kit high performance system compatible kit Replacement black Rotational Molding (2005-2015)

2005-2015 trucks had this reported, we'd have failed rears in those...

Lastly, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a whistle created by the vibrations at that speed... think about it, we all get it around the same speed... mine sounds like a light whistle to me. Think of whistling, you move your lips 1/10 of an inch and it stops... could not be a mechanical issue, but a sound issue. I would hope Toyota would know how to build a differential with tolerances so that parts don't fall out of spec, so early and so often... and again, over multiple generations of vehicles... if it is a gen 2/FJ/4Runner cross issue, and engineering related, it would have been fixed.

As I said, things whistle and howl for many reasons.... just talking this through peeps, no expert here. Does anyone with a lifted truck have this issue? Are we all stock?

I read someone undercoated his truck and changed the fluid, the noise went away... I confirmed with the guy, went away... I may/will try that. Besides, undercoat may be a good idea anyone living in Michigan...

Some people have noticed their howling was quieter (not gone) when they lifted the truck. Driveline angle and pinion/bearing have been the majority of predictions

 

Some lifted folks noticed quieter howling but over time it came back.
