I live close to the plant, and the press does not mention a peep of the work going to Texas.

Maybe because the Fremont plant built 2nd gens and the OP was paying tribute by posting "It was a good run." Seems appropriate.

My truck was built there, and I had a few friends that worked there. I feel sorry for my buddy's dad who will be retiring early from there :(

I don't know much of anything really. To me though this is much bigger than our 2nd Gen Tacomas. You know they made Corollas there too right?

I am told that this is an end of an era. It was the last remaining auto plant on the West Cost. About 4,700 highly skilled workers are now out of work.

NUMMI is the first plant that Toyota has ever shut down in over 73 years, and unique to NUMMI was the fact that they were the only Toyota plant to receive a zero-defect audit in Toyota History.

People speculate that it is because of the organized labor that Toyota is really shutting down the plant.

dsds: yes it was a good run and it's very sad to see it go!

I bought my Tacoma from Fremont Toyota right next to the plant and I was lucky enough to take in a tour.

There used to be a video of a Tacoma being built in the Fremont plant.
Unfortunately, the video is gone now unless someone knows how to resurrect it from here:

    http://www.insideline.com/toyota/tacoma/2005/how-to-build-a-pickup.html

All Tacomas for the American market are built in Fremont, California, 40 miles south of San Francisco, so we decided to get a closer look at what it takes to go from parts to a pickup. When we found out giant robots are used as part of the assembly process, the decision was made. We had to check it out.

A few phone calls later and we were all set to visit New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors. Originally founded as a General Motors assembly plant in 1962, the 5.3-million-square-foot facility was shuttered 20 years later when the gas crunch took its toll on the General's sales.

At that time Toyota was starting to carve a niche for itself in the American market, and the Japanese manufacturer wanted to set up a factory in the U.S. but didn't know the ins and outs of the American labor and political systems. The two automakers teamed up and reopened the plant in 1984 with new equipment and a new name.

Today NUMMI employs 5,700 employees, and it is responsible for turning out over 400,000 vehicles a year. In addition to the Toyota Tacoma, the Toyota Corolla and the Pontiac Vibe are stamped, assembled, painted and tested in the same facility.

It takes 22 hours to build a Tacoma from start to finish (including time to let the paint cure) and thanks to the combination of skilled labor and giant robots a Tacoma rolls off the line every 82 seconds. The build process moves quickly, so we documented it in its entirety in a unique photo flipper. Click the link below to scroll through the step-by-step assembly process, and don't forget to check out the robots.

    -----

There are officially no more automobile manufacturing sites in California - possibly the most automotively attuned place in the universe. Unfortunately for employees of the NUMMI plant in Fremont, Toyota decided to abandon the plant that makes Tacomas and Corollas after GM backed out of the joint venture.

With a range of time tested and bulletproof four or six cylinder engines the Toyota Tacoma is the compact pickup by which all others are judged. And that is saying something as this Toyota stalwart really hasn't changed all that much since Grunge was a popular musical genre. Available with two or four doors, there is a Tacoma out there to fit any lifestyle or budget. Interior materials, while not exactly luxurious, are built for durability and appear made to withstand the slings and arrows of even the most negligent owner.

Engine options include a 2.7 liter 4-cylinder with 159 horsepower (best suited to base level manual transmission models) and a spunky 4.0 liter V6 worth 236 horsepower (perfect for those who cant or wont shift for themselves). No matter which body style or engine you choose the Tacoma is one of those truly rare Toyotas; it is spunky and has got soul. Not only can you depend on it to be reliable but you can also rest easy knowing that you look really cool driving it.

I grew up just down the highway from that plant and remember the first time it closed. A good friend of mine jumped ship several months ago prior to the public announcment of the closing as he knew it was coming. Latest quote in the news was that former employees new full time jobs will be looking for work. They might get offered stuff elsewhere but who knows.

I hate though how Toyota is being made to look like the bad guy here though. Toyota actually bailed out GM the first time it closed and made it possible to keep that factory going for many many more years. GM pulls out and Toyota looks like the bad guy for closing the plant.

And on another note.. Bloomberg reported on March 15th that the US automakers combined had more "unintended acceleration" issues than Toyota has had in the past decade and that NHSTA basically swept all of them under the rug while Toyota tried to make efforts to do investigations many years ago. NHSTA basically laughed at Toyota for making the effort. Once again Toyota looks like the bad guy just because they make a great quality vehicle that actually lasts.

Toyota is trying to get rid of unions... Now if they stop buying parts from US companies like DANA and CTS we could actually get some quality truck :D

I don't really blame Toyota for deciding to part ways with the NUMMI venture. The Tacoma will still be built in the United States and in a more advanced facility at that.

Blame California's anti business climate combined with the anchor of partnering with GM. I don't know how any business succeeds in this state. You can also blame us for your crap paint too...
