100Million gallons is a whole lot of money that could stay here and not sent to the middle east. Of course many other products are made from a drum of oil but I think you get the point.

General Motors’ talked about the automakers perspectives on future engine oil requirements at last month’s ICIS Pan-American Base Oils & Lubricants Conference in Jersey City, N.J., said that a second-generation oil life monitor is under development at GM. After 20 years of oil monitor use, and with massive amounts of engine data available, GM believes there is potential for significant oil life extension. Oil monitors are found in almost all North American GM vehicles, and 6,500 miles is a common drain interval today.

“We stand behind our oil life monitors,” he continued. “If all U.S. GM vehicle owners used oil life monitors as intended, more than 100 million gallons of engine oil could be saved annually.
“Changing oil significantly sooner than required is not environmentally responsible; it’s not ‘cheap insurance.’ It wastes resources.”

The latest passenger car engine oil specification, is on the verge of final approval by industry stakeholders. GM played a leading role in GF-5’s development.

That’s why GM, stated flatly that beginning with its 2011 model year, “GM will only recommend Dexos,” GM’s own global engine oil specification. “It will be required.”

So now you'll have to use their oil in your car. And you won't be able to buy it for DIY. So you'll be forced to bring it in and have them do it for you.
Good thinking GM. Way to put yourself down farther into the hole.

And besides doesn't Mobil 1 already create synthetics that are marketed to go 10,000 or more miles before needing changing?

absolutely -- however, that they stand by the longer drain intervals is an independent issue. no manufacturer will ever make a claim like that unless it was valid. It would cost them way more in engine repair.

The Dexos spec is definitely a way to put money in their pockets buy licensing the technology. But again, it is a totally different issue. I did not post to argue one way or another. I merely post the info for those who do the 3K interval. It is up to every individual to decide what works for them. I use synthetic and do a change every 5k which is over kill but it makes me feel better.

I work in the industry and have direct access to the chemist who design and test products (used and new technology). We have diesel engine oil that works in mines (way more difficult conditions than anyone here will put their engine oil through) and we get well over 500 hrs.

That comes down to about 10000 to 15000k miles if not more if over 500hr is achieved.

    again you decide.

our oils that get over 10K are not synthetic.

Changing oil filters on a regular basis is a requirement.

read carefully -- industry stake holders. Its like any new spec that has come out prior to this spec. The fact that GM played a leading role does not mean that they own it.

GM and the industry in general will put money in their pocket but there will be a improvement over the last engine oil as it pertains to newer engine designs.

again you will still be able to do it yourself just like you do it now.

Q: Will the Dexos be recommended or will they be required? A: Yes!

Thanks GM! Still I am in favor of longer oil drain intervals if it can be proven to not shorten the life of an engine, my engine.

The only way I would go with longer intervals is if oil analysis proved the oil/filter combo I was using would support it.
I don't need some new standard using some new oil....

    Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act

above is a copy and paste of one of the specific details that relates to the issue.

Again just so we are clear -- you may need to use the dexos speced oil but it will not have to be a GM product. I'll repeat myself -- it's a new specification like the many that have come before. No different!
