And by all accounts (I don't have one but am considering it) an MBRP exhaust makes it sound like a chipped and tuned and piped turbo diesel.... hehe

    Should I do it? MBRP?

It's quicker, but the engine has to wind up to make it happen. The engine does run smooth at higher RPMs...... that being said, it's not really how I use a truck though.

It's something to get used to, but the motor grows on you. With my MT when I rolling start in 2nd and hook up at 750-1000rpm it quite literally sounds like a diesel.

    I dig it.

In terms of longevity, this motor in the Lexus with higher compression, higher rpm's, and "first generation", has proven to be a very reliable motor. Of course its hard to say, but from a longevity standpoint this engine appears to be no different than any Taco motor: weird sounding at idle and anemic at varying points in the power band, but durable and inexpensive to operate in the long haul.

Oh you guys kill me. Op says this doesn't sound right to me, you all jump down his throat and say it is normal. You all go to the dealer about something you think doesn't sound right and when they tell you it is normal you pout and throw a tantrum.

I'm sorry did you not all jump down the ops throat about him thinking his engine didn't sound normal?

Then you all bitch and moan about a rear diff whine that hasn't been linked to any failures and get pissed when the dealer tells you it is normal.

It's a little hypocritical is all I am saying.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
You need to try the latest generation Outback for its quietness -- the flat 6's are even quieter than our 4 cyl. So we can agree to disagree.
Many years ago on Okinawa we owned (cost me 300 dollars) a Subaru Sambar -- now that thing was noisey --kinda like a steel box placed on top of a riding mower. I sold it for $250 after leaving the island.

Do you need to know, or care?
Sound from engine is normal, it's the injectors cleaning themselves, read the manual and talk to the dealer. OP was asking about the noise that doesn't sound normal on an engine that doesn't have the feature, we should be glad we do! All else is just other observations, these threads lead to all different places.

Not sure what the issue is here?

I think it ticks because it's direct injected. A lot of new cars tick now.

Subaru boxer engines tend to sound a little like old Volkswagens. Part of the charm.

I would agree. We have a 14 Forester and before I put the cat back on my Tacoma the Subaru was louder plus the Tacoma suspension is way better.

Depending on what year it is it probably doesn't have direct injection which is where the clatter comes from, plus the Lexus has more sound deadening on it.
