Future Headache? (Spot rust)

First post, (I'll introduce myself soon!)

I've searched around here but wasn't able to find much except rust on older gens.. though I am sure one of you will pull a thread out of your hat (and for that, I thank you)

I've recently acquired a brand new 2017 Tacoma SR 2 weeks ago and so far, I love it. It currently has 700 miles on it..

I was under the car the other day wiping away road tar that was picked up on the way into work. I began noticing that damn near every weld on the frame has already began rusting. Drove through a small patch of rain once since the day it was purchased

I do plan on using liquid film, but rust is like a cancer..once it is there, it will spread eventually.

I understand surface rust is surface rust. But so soon? I've attached a few pictures, but this is throughout the entire frame

 

Normal it's on the welds, if it bothers you that much clean it with a wire brush. Then coat it with POR15

Just paint over it with oil based paint, let it dry for a couple of days and fluid film it.

 

Agreed, don't worry about it that much, but welcome to TW.

 

That's not rust, it's the color of the weld. Whatever welding material they are using now, it doesn't seem to like the coating they use on the frames and it doesn't stick to it.

I think it may be silicon bronze.

 

Mine has the same, to me it looked like re-work welds (I don't know if they re-work frames, I know GM/Ford don't) but I could be wrong. Ugly welds regardless.

Just how I did it: Used fluid film can for stuff under the hood/near the wheels and bought a fluid film spray kit for everything else

 

This is good. Rustoleum Stops Rust oil based primer and then rustoleum oil based semi gloss black. I use that combo and it works very well.

I went to the dealer today to have a dent pulled and the passenger tint replaced

All of them are like this, even their show room model. I feel better-ish about it now but I'm probably going to square away that drain tube that leaks directly onto the frame.

What makes you think they are brazing mild steel frames? This is clearly rust.

 

Because my 5 mile truck purchased in September that I brought home and put on a lift was observed with the same coloring peeking out of every single weld on the frame and it looks the same today. It's not rust.

Rust is also not a gold color that's reflective. I don't know what material the welds are but they are bronze colored, paint doesn't stick to them well, and they don't rust.

 

I'm no expert, which is why this thread is a thread lol.

But after looking at each Taco on the lot at the dealership, they all had this.

Three things:

1. If it is in fact corrosion and or a flaw in the coating, then it's going to be a wide spread issue..at least at the dealer I use. So take that for what it's worth

2. I'd document your concern with the dealer just so it's on your file or at least take pictures if it makes you feel better

3. After the last ordeal with the older gen taco's, I'm certain Toyota doesn't want to hear the words "New Taco" "Frame Rust" I recall taking my FR-S in for service 2 years ago and thinking "Why are their so many truck frames stacked up outside"

Go look under a Tundra, or a 4runner, or an FJ Cruiser...or go look at their forums. They've been complaining about this since like 2010 at least....not sure when they changed up their frame manufacturer due to the rust recall that came out, but I'm guessing that's when the change in their manufacturing occurred and this started getting noticed. I think I saw it as early as 2009 on Tundra forums.

To me my welds have a ton of splatter,( suspension) rust and shoddy welds. I'll take more pics tomorrow.
