Spare Tire TPMS sensor?? I thought?

i know this subject has been beaten to death, but i experienced something i thought was a little odd the other day. I dropped off my spare tire to get a 285 put on and expected my tire sensor light to come on when i left the shop. Surprisingly it never came on, even after stopping and starting my truck a few times. I know there is a sensor in it cause I saw it when i removed the tire last time. Has anyone else experienced this before?

 

yup... im doing that shit now... i have to change the sensor form the stock spare to my new one.... its annoying as hell...

 

You leave the tire at the shop?? or just swap it and put it back on your truck??

 

He dropped off his spare wheel and tire, to have a larger one put on. While they were doing this, he left the shop(without the spare). Once they put the new tires on, he will go back and pick it up.

 

I believe that the sensors only send a trouble code when there is a decrease in pressure of 25%. As far as your Tacoma is concerned, it hasn't been notified of a trouble code, it just hasn't heard from the sensor at all. I'm guessing that the light will come on after a period of time in which the sensor and receiver do not communicate, but I have no idea how long this takes.

 

I work with these systems every day, and pretty much have toyota's tpms systems down. the systems are just strange somtimes, a dude from work took his spare out of his wifes truck with a sensor in it, 2 years ago, and never put it back and the light doesnt come on at all. The tpms computer sends a signal to the sensors every X amount of minutes, to wake them up and get a reading. If it doesnt get any comunication from one of the sensors, usually it will keep trying for X amount of trys, and if it still doesnt wake that sensor up at the end of the sequence, the light will come on. usually the sequence only lasts 10-15minutes before it decides something is wrong and sets the light off though. Its programed like this because if a sensor didnt want to wake up right away, your light would be on all the time. Thats the most simple answer I can give you. Your system is still working though, if you get a low tire it will kick the light on.

 

My spare doesn't have a TPMS sensor in it. I thought that was kind of weird. I got a flat and when I took the tire down it had a rubber valve stem. So unless they are using a different sensor in the spares...

 

Some trucks dont come with them in the spares. Depends what package you got I guess. or wether toyota felt like putting one in the spares the day it was on the assembly line...

 

They discontinued the sensor in the spare on 2009 models.

 

Actually it's a 09/10 thing to not have the TPMS in the spare....

 

Thanks LostRebel and Trauma85. That clears some things up. I knew the sensor worked because I've had to put air in the spare to clear the warning light. I just expected it to turn on as soon as i left the shop.

 

I didnt even look the year of his truck.. I just know that ive had tacos come in with them, then one of the same year another day that didnt come with it programed.. Either way, Either youve got one or you dont.

 

When I swap out my stock alloys with the stock tires for my steel wheels with the 33s on them ( I do this 6 or 7 times a year) sometimes the light wont come on for a day or two, then it's on all the time. Unless I park the truck near where the stock tires are stored then it kills the light for a day?? Must have a 20 or 30 foot range. When I get new tires for the alloys I will pull all the sensors out and install them in a piece of pvc pipe with a couple glued on caps and a valve stem so I can pressurize them and hose clamp it under the frame somewhere. End of light problem

 

I haven't had any sensors on my tires since i put them on. About 2 years then out of know where the light came on my dash and i couldnt get the bugger off for the life of me. Well a week ago after it being on since november it just shuts off. I think these sensors are screwy as HELL.

 

That's even more screwy than my deal. I kind of understand my problem. Not even having them for 2 yrs without problems then all at once is strange especially since it went out again after 5 months. Are the old wheels& tires still somewhere you park every day?

 

your telling me, i talked to RCBS about it and was gunna rip my dash apart to just cut the wire that gave the light power. My old wheels/tires arent even in the same state so that didnt start anything. I thought there was some problem with the system but then jsut said screw it I DONT CARE. Well atleast i dont have to go on a wire hunt anymore.

 

I had all my 4 tires in my kitchen for a week before I put my lift on. My light never came on.

 

Well gentlemen, i must say. Gotta love that 30,000 dollars of PSI accuracy!

Weird. I have a 09 and my TMPS light came on. All the tires had perfect pressure except the spare. I filled it to 30 and the light went off.

was that a fluke then?
