Any woodworkers?

Hi folks!

I was wondering if one of you was interested in doing a commissioned piece for me? I'll gladly pay!

Small box, hinged lid, solid hardwood of some sort.
Photo attached as sample only. Size, material, color/stain to be discussed.


(As some of you may know, we lost our home to a wildfire in July. One thing I miss is a box like described above. Husband was military and I had a solid LEO job, so we spent many years apart. We always wrote and sent cards. All those cards and letters over the years were in that box... I'd like to gift one to my husband so we can start a new collection...)

 

lots of variables, what type of joints, hinges, size etc. in general different materials have different prices. Also what size and what design.

Should've been in this thread along time ago but i inherited my grandfather's tools a couple years ago. Two lathes, planner, couple table saws, band saw, and all the other usual wood equipment.

So far I've only made a center console/subwoofer box and a banana holder. He made a crap ton of bowls, I never saw him start one. He had 6"x2' pieces of different wood so I feel like he would slice them up in 1x1 blocks and glue them into a bowl shape to fit on the lathe.

I just got a new job where I'm home by 5:30 and tired of just sitting there. Any pointers or suggestions. With the hurricane come many down trees so I figured I'd go cut up a hardwood like a hickory or so and throw a piece up to turn it

 

I know it would have to get it kiln dried before using otherwise it will "check".

Anyone interested in a Stanley Bailey #6 plane? Picked it up locally at a yard sale. The rust is all surface. No major pitting. No breaks/cracks/welds in the bed. Small chip on the top of the tote. I'm sure it would clean up nice.

 

Messed around with some scraps and came up with this ,Oak&Walnut chopping board.

 

Storage chest with baskets in beetle killed pine, white oak, charred red oak, western red cedar, and padauk. Handles were carved out of Chinese juniper from my back yard. The top and sides were lightly stained with shop made padauk extract. This was my first real try at half-blind dovetails, and except for a drill press this was all done with hand tools. The baskets came from Pier 1 Imports.

 

Nice look. But Walnut and Oak should not be used for projects that contact food. Walnut is toxic and Oak is porous and can harbor bacteria. Use caution!

 

Yeah my boss warned me about that so now I just use it for hot pots and pans to cool off. Thank you for your input though.

 

where are you getting this? What Ive read is it can be an irritant if you are allergic to tree nuts but not toxic to humans..theres all kinds of walnut chopping boards. The only other thing is its porous like oak so that might be a hazard

 

looks like whoever had it was trying to plane some nails...

 

The cutting iron doesn't have any chips, just the lever cap. Which indicates that they were probably using the lever cap to loosen the screw holding the cap iron to the cutting iron.

 

This is going to be next project large built in for a good customer that just bought a new house.
