After reading this and another thread I have a question about the transmission knows when to shift.

Is it just based on rpm/throttle or also vehicle speed? I've seen mentions of speed but don't know if that was rpm based and speed was just thrown out, or if the trans takes that into consideration as well.

Thanks! I hope that wasn't in the first post. I at least reread that one.

Looks like a hypertech might be in my future.

After installing bigger tires and putting in a Hypertech speedo calibrator, my SSP does not shift based on speed. Now that I have 285/75's the shifting seems to be based on RPM. Mine doesn't shift into 6th gear until 78mph, where it used to do it at 72mph with the stock tires. I can also engage it at 71mph, where it used to be 65mph was the cut-off.

Did calibrating do anything other than fix the speedo/odometer?

It corrects the MPG as well. Basically it puts it back to factory settings. Worth the money IMO, makes it easy not to have to think about calculating the difference in MPH and ODO over time.

    a bunch of mods

The SSP performs its shifts based on speed, and monitors RPM as supplemental info. It uses the speed which is coming across the vehicles CAN bus, which is the information shared between the various computers (ABS, ECU, Trac, etc.).

Im not aware of which speedo signal the hypertech modifies, but if i had to speculate, I would think it might only be correcting the speed which is shown on the dash. Therefore the speed which the SSP is using is still the unmodified CAN speed. (or vice-versa). This would make it appear as though SSP is making the shifts at lower or higher speed (depending on the amount of Hypertech correction).

Makes sense. The hypertech unit is a harness and controller that goes between the wiring harness of the cluster.

That would explain why the shifts are all approximately 7.5% higher in speed than before. Unfortunately that does mean I may just sell it, as the shift points are way too high now and being that my commute is 40 miles of 70-75mph highway speeds it doesn’t make sense to use it while commuting, since it just stays in 5th and never shifts into 6th to help with fuel economy.

I have 5.6% taller (and 55% heavier) tires than stock. Because taller (and heavier) tires means loss in acceleration, I'm quite happy with SSP holding gears a bit longer. I always hated 6th gear for being underpowered and drove in S5 before SSP, so that's not a factor for me.

Yes, it does connect to OBD.

I got this from SSP site:
“Can ShiftSense Pro be used in parallel with other devices with OBD-II splitter?DO NOT USE SHIFTSENSE PRO IN PARALLEL WITH OTHER FAST-POLLING OBD DEVICES. Other fast-polling devices such as ELM327 (torque app and OBD-fusion) can compete for bandwidth over the OBD communication network. This could affect performance of the ShiftSense Pro.”
I’m not entirely sure (the least bit) what a “fast-polling” device is, and am wondering if the remote start falls in this category.

I'm pretty sure remote start would not fall under fast polling device. A fast polling device would be something that pulls a lot of data as you're driving.

I have this remote start as well as SSP, and I haven't had any issues. The remote start is only going to be looking for the 3 lock signals while the truck is off, it's not going to pull any info under normal operating conditions, and if it does, it's not going to interfere with SSP.

V2 chip is listed on the website for $12 shipped, so it must be a matter of just switching out chip.

I’m not sure but I was on the site and I saw something that was a chip add-on for like $$12 or $22 IIRC. I only glanced at it but haven’t been able to find it again, I didn’t realized what I was looking at and was only browsing around so I didn’t pay much mind to it.
