If it moves it can wear out.

Years ago I had a dodge that went through fuel pumps like candy. It was nothing to do with the pumps, something on the truck side of the electrical. I never figured it out, just traded it in.

Minor fuel contaminants wouldn't do much to the pump itself. Has op ever clarified what is happening?

OK got myself a new pump yesterday and just installed it only to find out the old pump is still working. So what we have here is a wiring issue. I would really appreciate if anyone can guide me through this. Which fuse or relay should I check? (none of them say "pump" :)Tacoma fuse box.jpg

Theres a relay taped to the wiring harness under the steering column. Called fuel cut relay.

Yeah even if you had 4 pumps from the cheapest plant in China, I think that they or stuff in the gas tank that you said you already coated and had clean filters on when replacing each one would have to not be the problem based on statistics. I didn't want to say anything since I have a lack of experience replacing pumps, but that is what my intuition was leading me to believe.

Can I not simply run some wires from the battery directly to the pump? Hook them up when I start the car, disconnect when finished? I'm getting really tired of this stupid problem.

Of course but does the pump run at a constant speed? I'd start tracing wires unless someone else has a better idea. I'm guessing a couple other electronic issues could be the case, but that would be my cave man style approach that can at least rule out visually faulty wiring.

maybe the relay is stuck "on" causing the pump to run full tilt even when at idle or coasting.

OK I verified the wirings to the relay, those seem fine, and from the relay to the pump too. So the relay is broken even though it looks perfectly fine on the inside. Now I'll have to order one and wait for two weeks ....

Is the relay getting a signal to turn on when the engine is cranking?

Beats me too. This car is possessed by an evil spirit.
3 pumps prior were definitely broken, I tested them.
