Any idea what that metal piece is and why they keep walking around the plane holding it to both sides?

I'm horrible with my commercial aircraft ID's, but I think that's an MD80. They have wind vanes just below the cockpit in about that location. Wonder if they're fitting a replacement or something hit it.

It's the preferred pre-flight method..."I don't remember that being there/not being there, is there one on that side/that other aircraft?"

Looks like it's just a straight edge. Pilot probably reported that one of the strakes looked bent. So the mech I s probably using the straight edge to compare the 2 strakes.

It was an L shaped piece of metal, almost like a long square tube cut in half

From looking at the fan it looks to me to be a 115, but it also can be an nx.

Still gonna stick to my first thought of them using it as a straight edge. Those strakes are for nothing but airflow they have absolutely no other function. So all I can think of is they are checking them for straightness. Hell maybe the gate agents possibly hit the other side with the jet bridge???

because that plane is older than you are, and paint is optional

im fairly convinced they are using plastidip to paint some of the planes, they come back from being repainted and within 3 days the paint is peeling all over the place, i think i could do a better job for half the price with an air sander and some rattle cans.

Maybe they used leftover 90's GM paint.

well I just found this thread and I'm gonna jump in. I don't fly them but I fix them. A few of our RJ's look the same. Its not whats on the outside. It's whats on the inside that counts. :headbang:
