Ha..take it in some place besides Toyota? Why ? 5 toyota dealers I went to said it's normal and the truck has 0 problems. That being said my 60k warranty will expire by end of July next year. Unless I take a 3 week vacation then it could be September 2018. Then my neighbor said we can rip out the driveshaft and replace the rear end. I am so looking to winter of 2018 for my trail truck that my buddy volunteers to build... well for beer.. I said I got him on any he likes!IMG_5927.jpgIMG_5922.jpg

I figured that no one really wants to have anyone other than the Dealer tearing into it until after the warranty is up.

I asked some of the TRD Pro guys on a facebook group. They're not even sure they have it. The words where " I may have heard it once". Very interesting.

I wouldn't have picked up on the howling either if it wasn't for TW. Do I regret it? Not one bit.I've learned more about my truck than I ever would have on my own.

I would have noticed mine howling without ever reading it on here, but I am OCD about my vehicles and pick up on anything that doesn't sound or feel correct.

My howling noise started before I ever had a TW account. I heard it plain as day unfortunately.

    Me too.

Mine is unmistakable. Other people point it out to me.

Are these howling issues limited to just the Off Road trim? Any Sport owners with the issue?

Yeah pretty much runs the gamut. Although I think the 8.75" rear end has the majority of complaints.

I was told by a Toyota engineer it was a characteristic of the double cab long bed... :frusty:

Obviously not the case as TW can attest.

Hmm. That definitely strange since they're not the same diff exactly yet both produce the same howling issue. Because the size difference, I can assume the ring gear is prob different but I do wonder if they share the same spider gears.

Surely there will be a fix for this soon or at least maybe Toyota will ID the real problem. At this point I’d be ok with “we know what it is and what is causing it but we don’t have a fix yet”. Instead it seems like everyone is hearing something different and to me this is why this thread is so important. Toyota has either taken a divide and conquer approach because they know what it is and know it either cannot be fixed or would be too costly or they just don’t know for sure. Crap, I don’t know either. We are not just hear to complain but rather communicate and all get on the same page where we can try to either figure this out or get Toyota Corp moving.

So acknowledged that it's there, there is a TSB for 2016/2017 manual transmissions that in 5th and/or 6th gear, a whine may occur, which we agreed is there. The tech ordered insulation and parts to repair, once they come in, I'll bring the truck back and they'll make the repair. Did not get a copy of the TSB, but will when I take it in for the second part.

I might be mistaken but I think that TSB has been around for a while now and it did not help some members
