    I used to just rent all the big ticket items like backpack, bag, pad and tent from Sport chalet, and I think REI does rentals as well. It's a great way to get out there without spending a fortune.

    We have minimal backpacking gear, and damn that was expensive. Only thing we're really lacking is one of those expensive tents that weigh less than your wallet.
