Awesome thread. I don't have any pics handy, but my cast iron skillet is by far my favorite tool for indoor cooking (and occasional outdoor, too!). I don't have a hand-me-down, but I figure my big skillet will start a tradition in my family. I have a smaller one, too, that I use on occasion, but I'm using it to teach my 3 year old how to cook. She does scrambled eggs right now, but is starting to learn the omelet. I have two dutch ovens, but they don't get a whole lot of use. When I do a BBQ cook and beans are requested, I'll use one to smoke the beans in, but that's about it.

My better half found me a gem. The handle was so rotten it turned to dust. Should be a blast to use

I tried this recipe and it works great...only thing I would change for next time is I'd use 1tsp of vanilla extract rather than 1/4tsp. Most markets have the buttermilk solids/powder just have to look in the baking aisle. Seltzer water is easy to find. I did use about 1/2 cup mixed batter per waffle and it was a full waffle, just have to experiment with yours as the recipe calls for 1/3 cup which on our waffle iron it wasnt enough to cover the whole thing.

IMG_3460.jpg Paid 3 bucks for this at a yard sale. Crust was so thick I couldn't identify brand, but for that price what the heck. After a bath in lye to strip and 4 coats of seasoning this is the finished product. Right off the showroom floor of a general store from years ago. Even has ghost marks.

I got my wife a new dutch oven from Lodge for her birthday. She already had 1 but she wanted 1 with legs for baking with charcoal. She wanted it to go in the camper so she got the lodge cover for t as well then asked me to make her a base for it. The base acts as a trivett when it's hot but also prevents the legs from busting through the cover. I used the lid for a pattern and cut it out of 3/4 plywood, marked the leg locations, drilled the holes with a step bit so they're tapered and the legs fit securely, then sanded and stained.

    Nice work :)

We have a set of Lodge cast iron. Last year when we were in Pigeon Forge we picked up a set of their little pans that we use for doing deep dish cookies lol.

It's good stuff! My wife has a whole bunch of cast iron stuff that has been in the family for generations some well over 100 years old, I think. She makes an old family rrecipe pound cake in a cast iron bunt pan that is the best I've ever had anywhere. We're trying to find a couple of the bunt pans 1 for each daughter.

I thought I found something cool in the woods...some old old cast iron pans then I looked close at them and they were just some OLD pressed steel pans. I still havent decided if I want to go pick them up just for hanging on the wall or not.

Holy crap! 3 bucks? That's is definitely a barn find.
The medium and small logos have a skinny cross in a double circle with Erie, PA under it 1920-40. They are not logos in demand by most collectors, so that means they are a bargain for users of Griswold cast iron cookware. They are good quality but far less expensive than the large logo items like skillets....in good condition, great for cooking. #12 small logo skillet, dutch in great condition, usually runs about $200

My better half fired off a warning shot that she needed some more cast iron to get some work done. DONE! So we went to one of our "go too's" and found a #9 710E small logo Griswold. Production 1920-1938. It was in excellent shape and had a very thin, clean seasoning. The gentleman also through in a basic 6inch #0 Wagner to sweeten the deal. 50 bucks out the door.Win!

Do you guys think Lodge is a good cast iron brand?

I'm looking to get my first cast iron skillet. Would be nice to be able use it directly on a fire.

Its a great, cheap, entry level brand. I got the skillet-pot combo set. I beat the snot out of it over the camp fire. They can be a challenge to get a proper season on it. You just half to use it alot.

Another great cast iron pot I have is an enameled version. It's really great on my homemade marina sauces that I use on pasta, meatballs and pizzas. It's a cheap one I bought at Walmart. Works great....just have to be careful to use wooden utensils with it as the coating can scratch off.
