I figured out how to heel and toe for downshifts; middle of my foot on the brake, toe on the throttle. The traditional way, ball of the foot (toe) on the brake and heel on the throttle doesn't work because the throttle is too short.

ha! yessir but you're not the first (and certainly neither am i). usually though i lay back during my shifts and just use my revved-up flywheel to get the power and rev match from there. but this Thursday i'm installing the URD shifter, so things may change after that. y'know: sport truck. :cookiemonster:

need one last opinion. Does anyone think pulling a 7% grade in 4th at 45mph/2100 rpm will strain the drivetrain a little. I was doing the Conejo grade and holding 50mph but was cut off and had to slow down about before cresting the hill.

My squeak used to come and go. Tried WD-40 a couple times as a temp solution. I don't think I've heard the squeak in quite some time now. Maybe what ever caused the squeak wore down.

Glad this Ricky Rudd technique works for you! Just can't get the hang of it!! Can't teach an old dawg new tricks, I suppose. Getting to the point of putting an after market pedal on. Can't figure out why they made the gas pedal sooo short?

Toyota blamed their stuck accelerator problem on the pedal getting caught on the floor mats, which was BS. I have my original, unmodified pedal, and it's not close to the floor mats at all.

They never told me they'd figured it out.
Heel & toeing is handy for down shifting for corners.

    I'm in the club.

There were not a lot of choices for Access Cab MTs. I'm stoked regardless.

No, I regularly drive around in 6th at 45mph. I'm not even certain its possible to really "lug" at anything above 1500 RPM. There isn't much power down there, but the engine isn't rough. I believe the ECU had throttle maps that prevent full throttle (or %Engine Load) in certain conditions.

For those wondering about a heavier aftermarket shift knob....

Just got the test shift knob from @St.Germain! Thanks for the opportunity bro. For reference the knob I have is the second one discussed here (Manual transmission Fan Club and BS thread (All Generations Welcome))

Below are a few pics. I threw the knob on after work and drove around the block to give it a quick test. The first thing I noticed is that it really makes all the shifting smoother. Based on my research this is what I would consider more of a medium weight knob - I'm leaning towards that weight being perfect for me. My 1-2 shift has never felt great (honestly, it was terrible prior to my Amsoil fluid change), but the heft on the knob really eliminates the resistance. I could probably pull a 1 finger shift for 1-2 if I wanted. The rest of the gears are butter now. The only cons I noticed are that there is (obviously) a lot more movement on the knob during regular driving; the reverse "lockout" had less resistance (biggest reason I wouldn't go heavier); and the knob was too small for my hands.

I'll get better impressions on the drive to/from work this week but this gives me a great starting point to figure out what exactly what I'll want to order in the future - assuming I don't end up hating it over the course of the week.

    awesome... glad you like it.

one thing about that... so my current knob is the Goliath or whatever it's called, 733g, really heavy. the other day i was in traffic at a light, wife was talking to me and i was paying a "normal" level of attention (read "not paying attention" lol) and i flipped it in 1st and let her rip when the light went green.

except i was in R. holy crap someone was watching over me in that moment. didn't kill the truck (although i was already rolling forward) and didn't go backward enough to hit the car behind me.

i immediately scheduled to have my URD short shifter installed, because word on the street is that it's a bitch to get into R. with this heavy knob, that's my next safety mod.

I'd be curious to know how that install goes. Last I heard they have to tin snip the tunnel just a bit to access the necessary bolts.

The next challenge for me will be finding the right size/weight shift knob out there. Anarchy-motive is pretty well known...any other recommendations?

Very interesting. I went back up the grade two more times simulating my experience from the incident I described in my last post. First I went up in third then up shifted to 4th at about 45mph and the truck kept accelerating. The second time I downshifted from 5th to 4th to the same speed and the truck kept slowing down. I also notice sometimes in 6th going 65+ the truck will accelerate with minor pressure on the pedal, then on a different day on the same road and conditions I will need to press harder to accelerate or maintain my speed.

Flossy Shop is another https://www.shopflossy.com/collections/shift-knobs. speeddawg.com has many but they're all 5oz.

in the pic with all those knobs i posted, there's a Flossy Grip Rod that i wrapped in leather. that one has the best feel around, totally love it. but it's not as tall as i like which is why i'm using the Goliath. i'm looking around for a coupler to add spacing onto the end of the rod so i can use shorter knobs and have them end at the same height. got any ideas for that?

I've found extensions but they all seem to be super aggressive or for standard size.

OMG look what you've done. I tried my clutch with the engine off and I heard a squeak. Lucky I can't hear it with the engine running so I'll try to forget.

I have used Disc Brake Grease on all the Pivot Points on my last 3 Tacoma Pedal assemblies, it pretty much cures the creaking and groaning clutch pedal issue. Usually takes me 2 applications, I go back and reapply a little bit more a few weeks after the 1st time.

Just wait until you feel the stick/slip as you are trying to let the clutch out smoothly. Even if you don't hear it, you begin to feel it.
