over-wheel-well toolbox?

iv been looking for a toolbox that will essentially be shaped like a digital font "w" so that it fits along the side of the bed and goes over the top of the wheel well, making a shallow middle and 2 deep ends for storage. i thought dual toolboxes in a tacoma bed would look pretty cool and still retain the bulk of the bed space. has anyone seen something like this?

 

Sorta, I had a couple of the Delta in another truck I owned before. Mine were white powder-coated steel and worked fine. Mounted two on the left side inner bed wall to create what I believe is almost like what you are describing. Liked them allot as I could easily get my KLR in the bed without the rear wheel hanging off the back as is the case with most chest type bed boxes and motorcycles. Found mine at what was a local truck and trailer supply place at the time.

Another thought are the Swingcase boxes as the idea of having them hinged is interesting for the fact that you wouldn't have to climb up into the bed to get to the contents on a truck without a lift however I'm certain that I could destroy a plastic box faster than the manufacturer expects. Your mileage may vary.

that deezee box is perfect...but its width and functionality are questionable...im not sure thats big enough to really put anything in it... but thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

 

I have a Swingcase in my truck, find it quite handy. The issue for me, is security. Its a plastic box, so I dont really count that as secure.


I use it for storing tie downs, and what not, but it super handy for that.

Just looked at your name and the service shield avatar. You have a MWR hobby shop on post? Most hobby shops I've been in usually have a sheet metal brake (huge freakin' tool used to bend sheet metal) and someone there who can walk you through how to use it and offer tips on how to make the bends you desire. Honestly believe that if you brought a battle buddy along you two could easily bend one up using the measurements that you come up with. Make the box two pieces with one being flat with the bottom sections bent up on it with flanges and the other the side with the front and back sides bent into the ends of it. Or, if time is your enemy I'm certain that you could find a dozen shops in your area that would be able to bang something like that out in a day or less. Of course now would probably be a good time to mention that it would be ideal to be in good standing with some of the folks in the maintenance shops who probably have everything needed on hand already and would be willing to trade for a portion of their favorite beverage.

Regardless, I hope you sort out something that does exactly what you want it to.

 

not a bad idea. i also thought of having a diamond plate box custom made but i havent gotten any quotes or estimates yet...as for the swing case, is it fairly sturdy? are the hinges fairly strong? and on another note, i just realized iv been researching a box for a full sized tacoma bed. and i have a short bed >.< so i guess what im really looking for is a l__l--! type box...minus the exclamation point. so a swing case with an extended arm on it...not sure if that is going to prove any easier to find but i will give updates on my findings.

I am also in the market for storage solutions, and pricing out wheel well boxes, My needs are less than rigorous, mostly surf storage and some beach camping, I like the swing out idea as It allows access to the inverter. I've seen everything from Walmart, to A.R.E. Im outfitting a 2007 SR5 I just bought, love it so far!

UnderCover Swing Cases. I got both off Craigslist for $150.

 

Good call Bluezzy, Amazon has some of the same stuff for 20-50 cheaper

 

I did another search on Amazon with the search string being "swing out tool box" and it brought up a bunch more.

 

Some places call them "Fender Well" boxes. I used one of these Lund/Tradesman boxes in my shortbed for a few years. Only problem is the bottom section it too tall for our wheel wells, so I had to cut off the bottom 3-4 inches of the box and rivet a new sheet of aluminum in place to close off the bottom.
