I have seen worse damage from Deer strikes.....twice in a Chevy full size I was driving when it struck the Deer. None were totals. They just show up in carfax as "deer strike".

OP I think you just need a CMC to get rid of the rubbing up front..... Looks like you'll be good to go.

Or maybe not. I T-boned an 80's f150 with my late model ranger in high school at around 35mph and my truck was totaled with frame damage. It was a Ford tho.... And definitely didn't start with a value as high as the taco. Good luck OP. :fingerscrossed:

The physics of a deer's impact to the structural components of a vehicle is much different than a vehicle impacting a stationary object like a median. There's a whole lot more momentum involved so the things that may not be immediately visible start becoming apparent when you start tearing it down and see frame damage and that has a serious impact on the net cost of repairs.

We're also only seeing one side of the vehicle. Remember, he struck another vehicle, presumably on the other side. Is there damage to every body panel on that side?

In a perfect world you would have told your agent about the additional items permanently installed on the vehicle that you want covered and provided him/her with receipts for it all, then having paid premium on those items. In that instance, there is no way the insurance company can deny your claim on those items. Most companies restrict additional coverage riders to permanently installed items.

As for percentage of damage on determining when something is totaled or not--so the independent appraiser gives a value for repairs and their recommendation (yea/nay on total or repair). The adjuster takes that figure and compares it to the NADA book value for that make/model/year and they get the difference in value. At some point it can become a judgement call on the adjuster's end whether to total or not. When it is that close to either end of the spectrum, more often than not the adjuster will simply total the vehicle as it's easier and closes the claim faster. Each insurance company has their own standards and each adjuster is given leeway when making determinations on a total or not. The insurance company will recoup a tiny fraction of the claim payout in scrapping the totaled vehicle to a yard, unless the Insured opts to purchase the vehicle back from the insurance company at totaled value.

I learned a lot of this in my job in IT for a family owned insurance company that writes Works Comp, Auto & General coverage for commercial businesses with fleets. I had to do a good bit of business analysis with our Claims department when we were creating our in-house claims management system. This particular company opted to empower the adjusters more than traditional companies do with decision making on claim management. Bigger companies may or may not have stricter controls in place for claim decision making, but the above is a general overview of the process.

    Sent you a message OP.

Incorrect. If OP is deemed at fault, there is no way he can get a diminished value claim, and even if he could it would be no where near $10k...insurance doesn't just hand those checks out willingly.

If it's written off, it's no wonder insurance costs so much. It looks like a piece of cake to fix from the photos, and if it is written off, I'd bet a curbsider fixes it and it's back on the road within 6 months.

I am glad you are ok OP but unless the frame is F'd I dont see it being a total loss.

it is pretty obvious from the pictures that his impact with the median was not at 65mph.....unknown the residual speed. The worst Deer strike in my 2004 silverado I had was at 60mpg...good sized Ohio Deer, hit it about 3 times before I got stopped. It was like $6500 in damage...radiator, AC condenser(neither leaked but they were reformed into a curved shape)...hood, grille, front fenders..frame extensions that bolt onto the front end of the frame. No airbags deployed though.

Have heard of some newer pickups involved in deer strikes where pretty much all of the front airbags deployed..that starts adding up $$$$$ quickly.

Front end is shifted back and closes the gap between the fd and fender. Not crumpled makes it look deceivingly good but it isn't. Maybe just body, frame, front suspension and airbags but it adds up.even though he's paid to notice things make sure he sees everything you see.

This was my 09' after I wrecked in 2012. nearly 14k in damage but it wasn't totaled. Mostly it was all body damage. Only mechanical stuff was the radiator, driver side lower control arm and the bumper and bumper mounts. Thank goodness for crumple zones. T-Boned a Subaru outback at about 45-50mph after the driver ran a stop sign, it wasn't as lucky.

Nope, they shot out like a cartoon character's eyes and found them down the road like a 100'.

You have a choice where it's fixed, make sure it's at some place that has lifetime guarantee.

when I traded my 09 in last year, it was just short of 100k miles on it, the dealer knew it was wrecked and I was still able to get almost 19k trade in for it. sure I could have got 2kmore had it not been wrecked but that's still a pretty good outcome.
