In my field I'd pick the one who made the C's. He's probably better hands on than book smart and can get it from his brain to his hands better to accomplish what needs to be done.

That was including equal experience, where’d you get that he was better with his hands?

Then you better make sure your fucking act is together. And I'm not just talking about that GPA. Learn. Dig. Absorb material outside of the classroom.

There's a great book on machining that is meant for high school / junior college shop classes called "Fundamentals of Machining" by John R Walker. You can find PDF copies online of older versions.

If you're interested in aerospace, the Bible is von Mises's "The Theory of Flight". I have a copy and it is extensive and readable.

For Mercedes and Toyota, chances are you'd start in manufacturing or quality or something boring like that. So be prepared to grudgingly swallow as much robotics, machine component design, and statistics as possible. YMMV but there's not much interesting in the Tier 1 world unless you can nail a design or analysis job. My resume is chock full of what I did with FSAE and my extracurricular academics with automotive and racing science. It doesn't hurt I mention modding and maintenance on there. (I usually leave out the bit about mostly drinking at mod days, though I'd like to get out of that habit.) That is where all of the interest from any job interviews that have given me traction came from. It's a lot, and I mean a lot a lot a lot, of information to try and absorb. You think you know shit until you start reading, and then you think you may know some shit, and then you talk to someone who knows their shit, and you don't fucking know shit. So you buy more books. Repeat those iterative steps and I'll let you know when I get to the "end" of the loop...

Aim high, but I will give you this other bit of advice (or insight) as well: some of the best experience you can get will not come from a top-dog, big ass corporation. You will be given a small compartmented box of tasks and responsibilities. At smaller places, where you're your only backup, you learn a lot, about various stuff, and you learn the shit quick. Because you have to.

    There's Free Career Advice Tuesday.

That's what's wrong with the world. Because experience is never equal, not even on paper.

I've seen it over 22 years in this field. Very few of the one's who breeze through school make it. They have the brains and can tell you everything that needs to be done. That shit is useless when someone is dying in front of you and you can't turn it around. They are the one's who lock up and panic. I've worked with one's that barely made it through school and were excellent at their job. I've worked with people who have made 98-100's through school. Most of them sucked or were so fucking arrogant they couldn't do their job. You can tell me about shit all day long but if you can't put that shit to use what good are you? Anyone can pass a test. Not everyone can function in the field.

It tells a lot more about the place and the managers that are already working there than it does the candidate if they choose GPA as their priority.

I knew a guy in college. Total fucking dipshit. Stayed at school all the day long, all night long. It's where I started using the phrase jokingly that "Engineering school isn't for smart people. It's for persistent motherfuckers." Anyways, he didn't know (or care) what the fuck a heat exchanger was or why and in what types of various situations you'd use one, but he knew them formulas in the book like nobody's business. Never learned either. I have plenty of examples of his benigness to practical applications. But his daddy was a top dog at Chevron. So when he graduated with his 4.0, he got a job at Chevron. And within the first six months, he cost that place over a million bucks because he had them shut off a line without setting up a proper bypass to replace a pump unit that didn't need to be replaced.

Sure he started fresh out of school making 90k a year. But he's still an idiot. And one day it will catch up with him.

I can look in the mirror every day and say "god damn you ugly and you are goofy as hell, but you ain't a damn idiot." And that's all I really can ask for. And I'm glad I don't work for a manager that tosses people's resumes out because it's not > 3.5

Most employers will never look at your GPA. Least none of min have....,..they just want you to have that paper. Although I guess you could mention your GPA in a resume although I never have and my wife doesn't either even with a 4.0 when she finished her master's.
