I let off the brake and immediately started to roll back. I then gently pressed the gas and that's when I heard the chatter. I know it was underneath me. Not sure if transmission or drive shaft.

Do me a favor: go put your truck in the same position and do the exact same thing, except this time, when you shift from reverse to drive, firmly hold the brake and then let off. You should momentarily stay in place. The sounds you heard was probably the hill assist control trying to work, but you didn't depress the brake firmly or didn't come to a complete stop. Let me know.

Bought a new 2017 DCSB Off Road w/AT a couple weeks ago. The truck was modified by the dealer with 4" BDS lift, 33 x 12.50 18 tires and wheels, plus other mods.
While driving the truck home to Ouray CO (up to 10,000' over the passes) I noticed trans issues, like winding to 5500 to nearly 6000 RPM prior to shifting in D. I had to let off on the throttle so it wouldn't redline. This with maybe 40 or 50 miles on the clock. I had commitments in SLC and so drove the truck manual shifting all the time so that I could stand driving it and not winding it out or lugging it too bad. The truck is back at the dealer. They tried to solve the issue thru re-flashing the computer. I was then told this would not solve the problem. I could not even use 5th gear unless I was going downhill. Never even thought about trying 6th.

They are now installing 4.88 gears at my expense, though I will challenge the dealership and Toyota about this. This is my 4th Tacoma and have never had any issues prior. 1985 SR5, 5 speed W/6" lift and 33" tires (this truck now has over 350,000 miles and I still have it), stock 2004 Tacoma Off Road M/T x-tra cab, 2009 X-tra cab A/T w/3" lift and 33" tires. I did change gears in the 85' and went with 3.70 ratio. The other 2 trucks I bought used, but suspect they have stock gearing (never really had a reason to check).

I know my new truck has issues with shifting and seeking gears. There is no doubt in my mind. I've never driven anything like it. Lugs under 3000 rpm then whines to excess, the down-shifts and then it starts all over again. It's OK if your driving on the flat at 75 if you don't mind 3500 RPM in 4th.

Will post again when I get the vehicle back. Just crossing my fingers that the gearing changes solves the problem. Awesome truck if we can get the trans to co-operate. It's a Tacoma! It should perform.

Not to come off like too big of a jerk, but you should have test drove another stock tacoma. You probably would have noticed that in the stock configuration, the AT is already a little skittish and likes to hunt. After a while for some drivers, this lessens, but generally the AT hunts around and is happier revving above 3.5k RPM.

Now slap a 4" lift and big 33" tires onto it. Of course its a dog, and needs a regear. Toyota should not cover this expense for you, there's nothing "wrong" with the truck. Your appearance "package" ended up costing you performance. Check out the OVtune thread if the regear doesn't solve your concerns.

3rd brake light leaked water inside the cabin at 3600miles. Dealership did a quick fix until parts come in. Other than that I have no other complaint.

I really like my Tacoma but..

I live in Co and I am always going up into the mountains for mtn bike riding etc. I've noticed that when going uphill on the hwy I feel like there are certain speeds that I cannot maintain in one gear. For example, driving 50mph in 5th. I'll start loosing speed and keep giving more throttle. Then it kicks down to 4th and accelerates back to 50mph, then upshifts to 5th again but can't maintain the speed and I slowly start loosing speed.

Today I put the cruise on at 50mph. It holds the speed just fine in 5th. Then while on the same incline I cut the cruise off and then it can't maintain 50mph...keep adding more throttle then it kicks down and speeds up.

It's like in cruise the throttle mapping, or shift points are completely different. Up to this point I just assumed that it was down on power because of the altitude.

Anyone else see a dramatically different driving truck while in cruise control?

    Mike

From my personal experience in the PNW, this is true. I would do the same drive home from work at ~65 mph and get 2mpg's better when I used cruise. The engine hunted less and holds 5th better.

One of my biggest issues with this truck is 5th gear. It's a good ratio, but the damn truck will never let me wind it out. It sits at 1.8k-2k always. Hoping @OVTune changes this.

Yes I am having the exact same issue. It’s like the transmission can’t decide what gear to be in and it gets confused. I have having the update done tomorrow at my local dealer. I will follow up a few days after that to see if it resolved that issue and my original issue that I posted about in this thread.

Got the update done this morning. Took them about an hour. I think I could tell a difference on the way home. Truck seemed to be more consistent when shifting. The truck also didn't shift too soon either which seemed to allow better throttle response. Haven't tested on highway yet. I think I need to drive it for about a month before I call it completely fixed.

Indeed it's common for folks to drive off after the update (like I did) feeling like it was all fixed, but the learning in these things is so nuanced and complex it seems to slowly pick back up poor behavior - not as bad as before the update but pretty bad, which is why you have so many folks over in the OVTune thread trying to get it addressed with an aftermarket solution. Good luck to you!

The timing is weird. My 17 was built in Feb and dealer has stated two times the TSB has already been applied. The biggest thing I notice is torque converter behavior when cold is better than warm. Once it locks up it's like the RPM's drop too far. The first few minutes in the morning are the best to me.

Thanks! So far mine hasn't changed since the update was applied. I'm hoping it will stay that way.

Mine was a July build - so can't comment on whether they resolved by August. I'd be shocked, sadly
