so if cost wasn't an issue, could both treatments be done to a set of gears, a best of both worlds?

    New question?

Changing the gear set is offset by the increased tire size. In theory if you match up both the speedometer remains the same but for many people it is not a match and the result is more torque applied to the ground which is my personal goal (not installing monster tires).

Now to get more HP out of the engine the RPM must go up and that happens by adjusting the shift points. I think the shift points occur mostly upon sensing load relative to RPM and to a smaller degree speed.

What happens when we screw up the speed the transmission thinks we are going by changing the tires and gears. The speedometer calibrator only adjust the odometer and speedometer on the dash cluster, does not change what the vehicle computer reads from the sensors built into the transmission.

Do we trick the transmission into shifting sooner or later or does this make a difference at all?

So has anyone figured out the part numbers needed for the TRD Sport? I have a 2wd, is a master install kit is needed or can the gears just be swapped out?

Technically the gears can just be swapped out but I personally would do the master instal kit, replace everything at once together. Might as well. I believe SDHQ post the link to their site on a previous page for both the Sport and OR

Under 10k you don’t need a master kit

After I went with 37's and 4.88's I got rid of the shift sense. I didn't really like it with that combo.

Not I just use s mode and limit the max gear depending on how fast I'm going.

    Better gas mileage too.

how many miles have those of you with 4.88's put on since the install? Wondering about longevity and durability. Hopefully they last long past the 2yr warranty. With reasonable use, service and towing what is there life expectancy in miles?

I'm at roughly 10k and they have been just fine. Much quieter than the stock gears too. But I have no reason to think they these wont well out live the stockers.

I think the better question would be, what are your Gallons per mile....
