Hello newbie here stumbled on this forum today. Seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on my (first) Toyota, specifically the 4 door Tacoma. Just have seen them around and I'm really liking the looks. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, comments, regrets, etc.? Maybe something I should watch for? Any comments good or bad appreciated, thanks!!

I'd say just start browsing through the 3rd gen thread section, see what people did to there own trucks, who kept them stock, and how they look! You will get some ideas of what packages you will want/not need and what people like/don't like about their tacoma. Welcome to TW.

If you can drive a manual, don't settle until you at least get to test drive one.

There are members on here who very vocally LOVE their 3rd Gens and those who very vocally HATE their 3rd Gens. If possible find a dealership who will let you take the truck on a multi-hour test drive. The powertrain on this model is particularly polarizing.

The majority of complaints regarding the third gen Tacoma (2016+) center on the automatic transmission while 99% of the manual owners LOVE their trucks. If a manual transmission is anywhere in your realm, get one. Even if you have to wait a few months to take delivery.

Do yourself a favor and start with the lowest price Tacoma, it should be 8-10k cheaper than a TRD. This will prime your salesmen and maybe you can find out what is better on the TRD. You may like the looks of the black interior, but be warned, it's a scuff factory. I believe all the trucks have the LS diff. and the same ride hgt.

Get the 4X4. Some people don't buy the 4X4 then want it later.

I guess I am lucky, had the trans TSB done and zero problems since. Been almost a year.

Hmmm interesting comments about the transmission. I'm familiar with standards and have owned one not really interested in another. Are the Autos unreliable or just plain quirky? I can live with quirky I suppose.
