Traded/sold my OEM OR wheels to my neighbor and he gave me his OEM sport wheels (both 3rd gen).

A Toyota dealership quoted him 250 bucks to reprogram my old wheels' TPMS to register to his truck. Basically 2 hours of labor to take the tires off to get the ID. Seems like BS.

Has anyone swapped over different TPMS at home? The only other thing I can think of is taking all 4 off his truck, deflating the tires, breaking the bead and getting the code manually. We would still have to either pay Toyota to reprogram or purchase that tool.

    Thoughts?

That's fucking absurd. My dealer did a sensor swap to my new wheels for free.

Complete BS. They can use a reader, just like you could:

    https://www.amazon.com/Autel-TS401-Activation-MX-sensor-Programming/dp/B00AERMVYC

And, they have Techstream to do the programming, just like you could:

Take it to a tire shop and have them swap the sensors. Mine had no problems getting the tpms out of my OR wheels and swapping them into my Pro wheels.

Thanks. I assumed there was a reader that could pick up their code, seemed like complete BS to me too. But my neighbor is an older gentleman and I think they were trying to pull a fast one on him.

That's always an option too. How much did they charge?

$2/ea. because I had them put in regular schrader valves in the old wheels.

On the subject of TPMS... I bought an OEM off road wheel to run as my spare so I can do 5 tire rotations, but there's no TPMS in it, just the rubber valve stem. Anyone know if you can run a 5th sensor in our 3rd gens? I know it used to be standard on the earlier 2nd gen models.

Bone stock for now but probably tires first, maybe wheels and tires.
    This thread is well timed.

I just picked up a set of F5s for my Sport and I was wondering what to do about the TPMS. Seems like having the tire shop swap them out of my stockers into my new wheels would be best.

You guys think its worth it to have the stock tires and wheels remounted so they could be sold as a set, or have them dismounted and sell the tires and wheels separately?

You likely won't get much either way. I kept my wheels since I'm going to scratch them up on trails. I sold my tires fast.

There are two things that you need to do.

First is to get the ID numbers of the sensors. You can dismount and read the number printed on the sensors or use a tool like the one mentioned above. Any tire shop should have one of these tools.

Second step is to program those new ID numbers into your truck's ECU. For do-it-yourself, the best option is probably the ATEQ Quickset tool. https://www.amazon.com/ATEQ-QuickSe...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=2Z110B4HKBSG5WRDR7HB
Dealer can do it with Tech Stream or a tire shop that has a programming tool.

If you swap them over, is the truck smart enough to figure out which sensor is affixed to which wheel (same when you rotate?) or does that have to get specified in techstream to accurately identify which pressure reading is with which wheel?

I was actually wondering the same thing. Just got my '16 and need to rotate the tires, wasn't sure if it would read incorrectly or not.

Depends. If you want quick and easy then leave mounted and sell together. If your looking to maximize money on them, you’d probably be able to get more by selling the wheels on Ebay as a set, and tires seperatly on craigslist. Much more labor involved though with shipping, packaging, etc.

    Too few to list.
$260 is what Toyota of Puente Hills quoted me. Got it done at Firestone for $19.99. No need to get the codes manually as a reader can retrieve them.

I just swapped mine around in my driveway. Used a high lift jack to break the bead and air compressor to reset the bead. Took about an hour including me looking up one sensor to make sure that half of it wasn't still in the tire.
