You didn’t experience previously because both of your cars were front wheel drive. RWD and AWD are different beasts. Leaking diffs in trucks and suv’s are nothing new.

Just had my 2017 SR5 incarcerated on 9/18. Due to my work schedule and the need to have a truck I didn't get my "rental" until that Friday so got to ride the motorcycle a couple days. My 2017 was purchased in Labor Day 2016 (Baja Assembled). It was only showing barely a weep at the carrier. Dealer ( One Toyota of Oakland) gave me a "rental" Pruis (at my request until the truck I demanded was ready) the following Tuesday (Day 7 of incarceration). Just picked up the "rental" Tacoma (2017 White Access cab 4x4 V6 auto). I got to admit it doesn't ride like my DCLB and the Prius was damn comfy...and fun to drive (never thought I'd say that).

The "rental" only had 5mi on it and the shifting is a lot different than mine which hasn't had any TSB done for the trans yet. Shifting on the "rental" is much more crisp but the shift points and constant upshifting is still there.

Dealer said my leak was just at the carrier gasket so was ordering gasket and some other seals. Had no idea when parts were going to be ready.

Every Ford truck I've owned had a rear end "moistness" issue. Nobody really gave it much concern until Toyota knee-jerked this into a crisis by grounding trucks with any seepage. Had they just said, "oh that? Ya, we'll get you fixed up on the next oil change" we'd all be smiling. The guys with legit leaking would be rushed to get fixed quicker. That alone would have reduced the size of this thread and smallerized Toyota's black eye for handling this so piss-poorly.

Update! I called regional and talked to the same guy. He lit a fire again! Supposedly the engineer will be looking at my truck late afternoon. Good . The bad the service manager called me back and said they talked to regional today (hmmm..no shit) and regional is sending a engineer to inspect. He said he was under the impression they are ordering another differential (#3). He said Toyota regional is telling them about all these differential problems that my dealer was in the dark over. Lies , bs, or truth? Not sure....
Well day 11 is approaching. I'm going to Seattle with the loaner vehicle just to buy a cup of coffee and drive back. My goal is 15k miles on this loaner before I give it back! Who wants to go??? It won't matter one bit , but with the dealer sticking it to me I thought why not stick it in them. Just cracked 1,000 miles on the loaner today. Add on the 64 mile ride home.

Just got a call from the dealer. Parts arrived for my truck unannounced. They guessed correctly that I had called corporate and fast tracked. Work might start this afternoon.

I called my regional number and they refered me to the Toyota care 800 number. Seems like you're making excellent progress though. They're attemping to " close my case" until I spoke with my dealership service manager. He said a guy from regional is coming out next week and we can " go on a test" drive. " your case is well documented. Seems like we've and another dealership made a determination". I said I don't accept your guys diganosis at all.. I'm taking it to a indepednent shop who rebuilds differentials all day for a living and we'll see what they say. Then his tune changed 100%

They keep calling the howl/whine " normal". He said " well.. your differential isn't leaking" I said it has nothing to do with a LEAK. I can refer you to TSB-0057-13... On the 2nd generation. I'm not making this stuff up sir.

How great would this pic be with 7 more Tacos in the air getting the rear fixed.

And they will, every time. The way around that for me was telling them I had a case number and demanding to speak to a Customer First Administrator.

I may have to do the same. I know a pretty cool dude who just rebuilt my brother 2003 Mach 1. I may have to get a second opinion myself.

Yep. I got the Regional gals number, too. Weird how regional does more to make things right than corp does.

Pretty much, Toyota has done a good job of burning themselves. Toyota has been fucked up ever since the Prius unintended accelartion fiasco. Now when something happens they lose their shit and make crap decisions with the handling of their recalls.
Truthfully everyone here should go get their trucks back and drive them until their parts come in. There is no legal ground to hold these trucks, It is voluntary,
Think about how many recalled vehicles are the road right now. How many people are still driving around with the air bag recall not being done? Ford is buying back tens of thousands of their ford fiesta’s because the transmission and quality of the vehicle is such garbage.

Tacoma World is a double edged sword, It’s great for info and people with a common interest to come together. But it also does a good job of fanning the smoke into a giant forest sized fire when it comes to issues with our trucks.

My advice, Go do your research on other vehicles out there folks. The grass is not as green as everyone thinks it is. Just ask the early adopters off the current gen Colorado.

Yes and no. I mean, do I think my differential is going to blow up in 10,000 miles? Not at all. However, the fact that Toyota can't seem to handle a little gasket leak and seems to being clouding the whole thing in smoke and mirrors is highly concerning.

This whole thing has been tremendously mismanaged.

They called me back after my negative survey. I sent them pics and they said they'd clean it up, but I have no intention of driving back across town to deal with them.

Mismanaged? Absolutely. Unfortunately the consumer getting crapped on is nothing new. I see it with pretty much all major corporations these days. If you think its bad from the outside, Try working for some of these companies. News flash, Corporate America doesn’t give a shit about you or any other consumer. You’re all numbers along with the workers that work from these companies.
