/r/personalfinance is a little extreme most of the time lol. Those are the kinds of guys who will tell you that a mortgage is a bad idea and you should live with your parents until you can buy a house in cash.

That said, negative equity is lame, don't do it. You don't need 4WD that badly.

If you really want to trade it in, make extra payments and sacrifice something else. If you can swing a 40k truck to begin with, you ought to have no problem making $4k worth of extra principal payments in a year. Couple that with your regular payments, and you'll almost certainly at least break even, given the slow rate these trucks depreciate at.

I'd say stick with the 2wd until you can come out ahead.

Learn to drive it. 4wd is fantastic, but don't dig a hole just to get it. Apart from my XJ, all of my cars in the past have been RWD, even my SUV's and I've never been stuck in the snow.

Tires make the car, that and the thing in between the seat and the steering wheel. If you think you need 4WD, you simply need more seat time.

if you don't agree, FIGHT ME

    ^^^ I mentioned that.

And yeah, /r/personalfinance is a little intense, but this thread sounded close to some of the auto loan horror stories on there. (They have their own section specifically for those horror stories). Just want the OP to get ahead of this as soon as possible and not make mistakes that can take years and years to rectify.

2wd is cool, drive what you can afford.

I paid around $33K for my used DCLB OR with 18K miles on it. I added a bumper to bumper 100K warranty for an additional $1500 and with taxes I walked away for a total around $37K. There is no reason to spend $50K on a new truck, especially given you're upside down on your current truck. Like others have mentioned, work on paying down what you have, and in the meantime look for something slightly used and save yourself some serious $$$. Trucks have the highest profit margins on them versus any other vehicle when bought new.

If you keep the current make sure you don't sink a ton of money into it with mods. You can honestly do a lot with a 2wd. A winch, proper tires, and a locker will go a long ways- but if it's not what you want you'll never be happy. But it's good that you have the proper mindset. I'll be interested to hear what you end up doing!

Must've missed. Definitely read through a lot lol.

basically there's no quick fix to it. A new truck would just be a band-aid for a while really.

OP, you should look at the current warranty you have, what does it offer to worth $5k while others in the thread have mentioned something like $1500.

For $5k that better be a 30 year/300k mile warranty.

Any thing other than keeping the truck is a lose some more money situation, drive the truck, make your payments. Either pay extra on the principle or stash some cash away towards a second ride that you use for off road fun. Once your not upside down, then re evaluate.

Did you get the lube for free at least, or was it not used?

    If I had 736 a month I'd be buying a house. Not a truck.
