prerunner/4x4

So what are the advantages of a prerunner? I mean they really aren't all that cheaper, the mileage is close to a 4x4 and they look exactly the same, so really why get it? Not trying to insult just seeing if I don't have all the info on these things. Figured I'd post here to get the opinions of the 4x4 peeps.

 

when i bought my tacoma i was 19 and had 4 tickets on my record. there was no way in hell i could afford insurance for a 4WD.

also alot less stuff can go wrong with a 2WD as far as breaking stuff on the truck when prerunning in the desert

 

Hmm, didn't look at the insurance thing. I have owned 2 toyota truck since 93 and never had any problems with 4x4. I also don't go wheeling that much. good info

 

why would 4x4 have higher insurance rates? If anything it's safer in bad conditions.

 

4x4s sell for higher used in certain areas, IE snowy areas where 4x4 is needed or places where a lot of 4x4 enthusiasts live.

 

op, when i was shopping a couple months ago 4X4s were quite a bit more expensive than prerunners. i live in se texas and have no need for 4X4 cause it rarely ever snows here and i don't go muddin. i just like the look of the prerunner's higher stance.

 

prerunning in the desert? lol taking it a bit literally are we? no one buys a prerunner to prerun in the desert.

 

You sit at 4x4 height for better visibility, but typically get 2+ mpg better gas mileage.

Price depends on what the dealers have on the lot. They'll deal harder if there's a bunch of anything on the lot, versus buying the 'one and only' they have.

I don't know but I was looking around at used Prerunner prices and they are not much cheaper and gas mileage aint That much different. Just kinda seems like it doesn't make much sense. I don't know what the new prices are though. Maybe as previously stated, specific areas might be a better fit for Prerunners.

 

There are no advantages. Some people have no need for a 4x4. People in places where it doesn't snow and only drive on the street do not need 4x4. As said already, insurance is also cheaper (at least in California).


Some people like me like to push their PreRunners. I don't do anything that warrants the use of four wheel drive anyways. PreRunners are highly capable though, especially if they have the rear locker.

 

yea it is about $50 a month cheaper on insurance to have a 2wd verses a 4wd!

 

If you think you'll want or need to use 4x4 than get it. If rear wheel drive is all you need then i'd get that. I had a Colorado ZQ8(two wheel drive) and it was just fine, it was too low to go 4x4 anyway. I decided i wanted to have a more capable truck and do some off roading, so i bought the 4x4 taco.

 

While we're on this topic -- Will TRD 4x4 wheels fit on a prerunner? Are there going to be spacing issues?

Yes. The only difference with the 4x4 is the ability to use your front wheels.

 

I see. All good points. I honestly do like the idea of the Prerunner. I really don't use 4x4 anyway but the few times I do it get's me to work. I alos think it is cool in someway to be able to make it thru some offroading and some snow in the 2wd. I don't know why but it is I guess I would consider a preunner if the price was right

 

insurance views it as a young driver can mess the truck up alot more with 4WD ie: doing stupid stuff off road

not really, many people buy a 2WD truck with the intentions of building the shit out of it and using it off road. if you're not planning on using the 4WD why buy it. long travel suspension can get more travel with a 2WD front end wrather than a 4WD. dont forget toyota didn'd coing the phare: prerunner. prerunners were born in the desert and build by racers

I would never buy a PreRunner. I have owned 4 Toyota 4WD trucks since 1986. I currently have a 2004 4WD Tacoma. You never know when you need 4 wheel drive. The only thing about PreRunners is that they are cheaper.

 

strong possibility, i dont know for sure. many, many race trucks are 2WD
