I don't know why they put that barrel thing on the end, but you are correct on the screw and lock nut.
I adjusted mine to get rid of the pushrod slop, as it was giving me an annoying click every time I pushed in the clutch. Now, I followed the whole procedure outlined in the 16+ service manual, and got it adjusted to 2mm of pushrod play (it was around 20+mm, spec says minimum is 1mm IIRC). No more click, but the tradeoff is the release point is slightly higher in the travel than stock. No worries about clutch damage when I finished it, because the pushrod still had that small amount of play with the pedal fully out.
I can't stress it enough - don't wing this, dig into the service manual and follow the procedure!

I was hesitant to downshift because there was an idiot riding my ass and I was only about 5 seconds away from cresting the hill and leveling out.

When new, reverse didn't want to cooperate and going into 3rd was a bit chunky. 25000 km later, smooth as silk. I really like the fact that she's a full synchro box too.

Exactly, night and day difference between the shifting in 2nd and 3rd Gens. I can use my thumb and forefinger to shift gears in my 17 as it is that easy.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the 2nd Gens, they just require more effort to shift gears.

I picked mine up with just 8mi on it. It was smooth shifting compared to our last two cars, but it has become a lot silkier and I'm still on the first tank. It is definitely breaking in.

They actually had issues with the throwout bearing and would destroy synchros.

The throwout bearing tragedy has plagued Tacomas from the 1st generation through the 2nd...hopefully they fixed that on the 3rd gens. My first clutch was replaced at 30k because of the dreaded TOB chirp, now my new one is chirping with only 20k miles on it. Just going to live with it now, it's pretty rare that a throwout bearing actually fails but the chirp is goddamn annoying.

This happened to my subaru...destroyed the bell housing and required a new tranny to the tune of $5k

My 2001 Taco was sold to a friend of mine back in 2010....He is still driving it - with 225,000 miles on the clock and the ORIGINAL clutch !! My 2010 had 125,000 when I sold it to a co-worker just under 2 years ago...No clutch issues. My Gen 3 now as 37K and no issues. Clutch life has a lot to do with how you drive I suspect - Clay
