Similar experiences with me personally - I was close to eating losses within my first few months of ownership as well. Loved the look and off-road capability, hated pretty much everything else about it. But I was determined, learned a LOT about the truck, replaced my CKP sensor, cleaned my oily MAF, tightened loose intake hoses, greased the dry u-joints, tightened things up with suspension that came loose from the factory, and finally the ECU upgrade that's been mentioned here. If you're willing to hang in there...it can be a really fun truck but if you just wanted to buy it and drive it without a care like most Toyotas... may not be for you.

Not perfect, but I love my 17'. I've never understood someone buying (any) new vehicle then saying how much they dislike it.

I've never spun the tires on dry pavement with the truck in regular mode (haven't really tried very hard), however, in ECT mode I've certainly had no issue doing so.

 I couldn't agree anymore with this statement,if you test drove and researched it properly then you should of made the right choice for you, all of a sudden you don't like something and demand it be addressed and fixed by Toyota.

I admit for the first while that I've had my Tacoma, I didn't exactly like it. I've had no issues, the truck functions as it's supposed to, and has been completely reliable. However, I wasn't able to come to terms with the transmission. It wasn't as snappy as the 4.0 liter in my 4Runner. I wasn't sure if it was something I'd ever really get used to. But I have, and I'm liking it more and more. It took me a while to really start to like my Tacoma - I've had it since March of 2016, and really until this past summer I was still frustrated with how it felt. Then things just clicked, and I'm happy to drive it now. Maybe I've just gotten used to it, I'm not sure.

It's easier to come to terms when your completely pot committed on the purchase.

Relatable. "Trust the process" right? Haha. I live in the mtns of NC and hate the shift points going up hills. I'm winding out 4k rpms going 55-60 going up inclines and it drives me nuts. I even went and test drove a Denali 1500 with full intentions of buying (owned a GMC before this taco) which was incredibly nice, power ect. Money isn't a issue and I may go back to full size one day but there's something charming about our trucks. You really don't do anything to those trucks. After the test drive I got back into my Tacoma and realized I'm not ready to give it up just yet. We shall see

Same boat, I bought the truck and loved it. Then I said "what have I done" I want my big comfy king ranch back. After another few weeks it kept growing on me, and now a few months later I love it. They are just fun little trucks.

This is so true. Big truck is so.much more comfy but fun driving in city and off road is so much better. Give or.take with midsize. Love it fits in garage easy too. Plus I commute and just wife and I so all the room we need. Plus. She has suv if needed

Its getting bad, Im almost broke.
In my younger days I sold Toyota for 6+ years. I didn’t feel I needed to do any research before buying. I remember the older gen 2 tacos and the late 90’s v8 tundras and I knew how great these were. I ASSumed that the 3rd gen would just be even better. So I took a short test drive and told the dealership what I would pay, they said yes and I drove off into the sunlight. I immediately dumped 10k into mods only to be so sorely dissatisfied in the engine/trans combo. I live in the mountains so I’m constantly dealing with steep elevation changes. For my situation I’m at a huge $ loss if I dump the truck so I’m going to suck it up and re-gear it in a few weeks. I love everything about this truck except for the giant elephant that came with it. From what I read the gear swap will make it the truck it should have been to begin with. I think I’ll be happy then. Just sharing my experience. To each his own.

Isn't the aforementioned ECU tune in thread a cheaper fix?

Add me to the "I don't get the disappointment" group..
Of course, my previous Toyota experiences were all 22RE powered MT trucks (and a '90 SB V6 MT), so my experience with Toyota trucks is that of keeping the gas pedal floored at all times to keep up with slower traffic (except the '90, that thing was a beast) :) . Don't get me wrong, I LOVED my 22RE truck and 4-runner, but they were slow as can be.
Traded my Jeep GC Hemi in for the 2017 DCSB Sport, never expected it to be fast (hey, I had that with the Jeep).
This truck has met or exceeded all of my expectations, plenty of power on tap, just have to press the skinny-pedal down. I'm pondering the ECU tune, but I honestly am not convinced I need it.

To me if u already dropped 10k and the issue is engine trans then I agree regear would make since. Trust me no perfect solution to any. My engine trans is fine in my diesel but still is slow and lags but runs smooth on highway and holds easy at 28 mpg at 75. But do have some rattles and some rest end noise and have had some minor warranty work on emissions. I have 47k miles and no I want to stay mid sized and I'm going tacoma because to me interior and exterior is nicer and I like toyota. I'd definitely get the 8 speed colorado gas too after driving it but as said like the looks of toyota. I test drove as 17 for over an hour and it did shift more on highway and was annoying . Hoping the 18 will have better tune. But I decided I am not ordering but going to wait till they hit the ground to test drive them first to see if improved

No disappointments here. I have a 16 Avalon so I was already used to, and happy with the 3.5 engine. I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and it performs very well as far as I'm concerned.

Just drove 100 miles with my family on the freeway. Set cruise at 80mph. 12.5mpg. My friends full size Chevy Denali truck with a 6.2l v8 at 85mph gets 19.5 mpg. He has 2x the hp I have. All things being equal where we drive Why does his Chevy beat my truck? Total disappointment.
