What Chainsaw do you run?

I loved my stihl too until it wouldn't idle after warming up. The carb was bad on a 10 month old saw and it wasn't under warranty and blamed on fuel. The bad part was is I never leave fuel in the saws, mix it 1.5 gallons at a time with synthetic stihl oil and that was supposed to double the warranty. It was left at the dealership and we still haven't spoken after 15 years of business. Stihl won't give him a new carb and I won't pay for the new one $125!!!!

 

FWIW the Dollar is made in Germany like the old Stihls and has a magnesium block. It is a screamer. Amazing weight to horsepower.

 

If its magnesium, don't let it sit for loooong periods of time on concrete. The old homelite i was given has magnesium parts and it seemed to have been eaten away at by sitting on concrete while being stored. Granted they sat for years, but hey, knowledge is power.

 

I'm probably the only one here running this.

 

I wish i had one of those. Hows the actual run time on it? Does it bog down easily?

Not that one in particular but I also run an electric. Mines the Ryobi 40v brushless model though, nothing special. It's enough to cut all the wood I need for a camping trip on one charge and I don't have to carry around fuel mixture in the truck bed on trips so that's a plus.

 

It has plenty of torque. I have just cut a few small branches with it but have a large pine to cut down pretty soon and my plug in one wouldn't be powerful enough. There is a video on YOUTUBE where a guy cuts down 2 12" trees with a 2500 battery.

I first bought the EGO leaf blower with the 2500 battery and it has more power than most plug in ones. I had a B&D 36V chainsaw before but it could only cut around 4" before it bogged down. On that video it looks like it tears right thru the 12" tree.

 

OT: Two cycle engines need to be retuned every time you take it to a different location and even when the barometric pressure changes. If you can learn to do this properly and NOT run the engine too lean they will start easy, have maximum power, and last for decades. I bet most of the starting or running problems are because the low and high speed settings are not correct for the conditions. A well tuned saw will sound like it’s misfiring or dieseling at full speed yet will have power when there’s a load on it.

 

Thats the tough part for people (like me) who dont use them that often. My ear isn't good enough to discern "4 stroking" and running lean or rich. I wish it was, but tinkering here and there with my string trimmer has taught me that no matter how many sound clips i hear, theres no substitute for the real thing. And i dont have anyone around me that can accurately show me the difference. I wish there was. Ive replaced the carb on my trimmer and have it as tuned as i can get it (runs like a raped ape) but i can't tell if its too rich or running lean.

 

what chainsaw sharpeners do you guys use? I have the manual files, but never seem to get it the right angle even with the guide...

 

I file by hand and don't use a guide but after about the third time by hand I have to send it away to get sharpened to get back to square 1. I know some people who have luck with the grinder method and others who don't. I try to avoid dirt, soil and wood binding the chain so that I don't dull it too quickly.

 

yeah I just rather not take it to someone...I can get it "ok" but not great. I can tell by the saw dust its not right. When its sharp it cuts through trees no problem!

 

Stihl MS271. So glad I paid a little more for a whole lot more power.

 

I'll probably take one on the chin for this but the $29 Harbor Freight electric sharpener works like a champ. Takes a minute to set up the angles and adjustments but it sharpens at a consistent angle. I don't know the difference from a new chain or HF sharpened chain. Heck I've even plugged it into my 120V AC plug in the bed while in the field.

 

I run an Echo on our property. Had it out yesterday clearing some trees for an archery lane I'm putting in. Have a ton of other brush clearing later this fall and winter so the Echo is going to get a good workout.

 

I use my Dremel. You have a choice of bit diameters (like files) and a guide that attaches to it, to help keep the 30* angle.

Not as good as a professional sharpen, but I can get it quite sharp rather quickly.

 

Takes practice. I've been using a file with guide for 30 years and would never consider any other method. With that skill, I can sharpen my chain anywhere in just a couple minutes.

 

Yeah Like I said I get it "ok" but not like factory sharp.

I was thinking of using that as well. I may have to try it out.
