I don't think they are. They have lost me as a loyal customer over this.

Add my truck to the list of throwing the P2440 and P2442 codes...

Created an account to post and keep this thread going. Thanks to everyone who has already posted about their issues. This sure seems like a very specific and widespread issue.

How many miles on your truck? And what are you doing to resolve the issue? Is the dealer being of any assistance?

45K on the truck and waiting on the dealer. Their quote for the repair was $1950.

The dealer quotes for this are outrageous, the parts are around $500 if you use the Tacoma valve set and it literally took me 30min to swap mine out. I need to open a car repair shop if these are the prices you can charge people.

Now that someone has done the legwork on the tundra valve set and determined it works go ahead and use those parts to save you even more money. Very surprising Toyota still hasn't stepped up on this, I have a buddy who owns a 04 Lexus rx330, received a notification in the mail to bring it in for a dash replacement because it could become sticky to the touch or something along those lines...I mean come on seriously
Toyota. We have Tacoma's in limp mode because of your inferior parts.

I've seen the sticky dash before. Slightly annoying. Good thing they issued a recall.

I wanted to post a fix that I found for my 2008 Tacoma PreRunner with the 2TR-FE 2.7L engine. The OEM Secondary Air pump "grenaded" itself after 230,000 miles, and I didn't want to pay $150 for a used pull of unknown condition, nor pay more than $500 for an OEM replacement. I did some hours of online searching and came up with a cheap replacement: The Dorman 306-010 air pump unit. I found it listed as a replacement for the same engine in a Toyota "Hiace" minivan, that is not sold in the USA. This pump is not listed for use in a Tacoma, but is an exact replacement I have found for the OEM 17600-0C020 unit that is in my truck. I had to remove the OEM wiring and plug from my old pump and transfer it to the Dorman unit, and the power connections on the motor have different sized lugs so the polarity can't be accidentally swapped. The provided silicone cover gasket from the new Dorman pump will fit the plastic OEM housing perfectly, if you need to replace that (I did). After cleaning out the hose and secondary air valve from the debris of the destroyed OEM pump & stored fault codes cleared with my diagnostic tool, my "check engine" light had stayed off. I did this fix over a month ago now, so I'm very sure that this pump is a good replacement. Also, this thread gave me a solution for the crappy OEM foam filter in these units, so I wanted to thank you all for that!

    Too few to list.
Can you post a picture of the Dorman pump in your truck?

Hello everyone....New member here, just wanted to chime in on the thread. I too have been having issues with secondary air injection throwing CEL but truck never went into limp mode. I searched the internet and found Slyfox75 who had kits for 4 Runners and Tundras and emailed him to order one. I've had this kit on for about 5 days and so far no check engine lights and is running good. The kit is pretty easy to install took about 20 minutes but I am real picky about how wires are run. I'll report back if anything else develops. Anyone needing more info can contact jeffcolemaps at gmail dot com . He will get back to you and he is good at answering any questions. BTW I have no affiliation with him, just passing on some help to other member here !

I am confused by the Slyfox75 kit. What exactly does it do? Hard to find any information on it.

3rob3 , I'm not exactly sure how it works. I believe that it some how sends a signal to the ECM tricking it into thinking that a good signal is coming from the air pump? I would email Jeff at the email address from my other post , I'm sure he could explain how it works. My truck is running great so far...no codes !!!

Add one more to the list. Got confirmation this morning that both valves are stuck open. Sounds like mine at least lasted longer than most as I have 195,000 km on my 2012 taco. I've been quoted about $1400 + tax to replace them. Been in contact with Toyota Canada and they repeatedly refuse to respond to my comments that the Tundra warranty (10 years / 240,000km in Canada) implies that they have recognized that this system is faulty.

One thing I've discovered is that I can reset the sensors on the fly by throwing the truck in neutral and turning the truck off and on 3-4 times and restarting it. This briefly allows me to get going 100 - 110 km/hr for a little while.

I spoke with a family friend lawyer and he is confident that Toyota has shown enough knowledge of this part being faulty that I could sue for the full repair cost. I'm not really the suing type, but seriously considering going down that route because I am just sick of the ignorance that consumers receive from auto manufacturers.

I don't want to get a different subject going here, but I'm also interested about switching it out myself in the event that I don't go through with the lawsuit. Is there a service manual out there for the 2012 that covers how to remove/replace the valves and pump?

Stumbled upon this thread while researching info on 2012+ Tacomas as I am getting ready to purchase a new truck and I'm pretty set on the Taco. Very disheartening to hear people having so much trouble with so little concern from Toyota. My family has had excellent reliability from Toyotas, including my dads 310K+ Gen1 Tacoma, which Toyota replaced the frame on for free at 230k miles.

Looks like if I buy a 2012 I will be putting the bypass kit on immediately. Not something I expected to have to do when buying a Toyota... especially after preaching to people that nothing beats Toyota on dependability and longevity :anonymous:. I still believe that. Its kinda like when you find out one of your favorite sports players is an ass hat in person.

The first set of valves could be low quality, just like the rusty frames. So maybe I'll get 200k miles out of the parts that replaced 40k mi parts. For $2,000 for the dealership to put in a $450 part, that only took me 1.5 hrs to install, is suspect. Maybe they adjust something that keeps them from fouling again? Who knows? As far as the uni-filter mod, that's $12 and five minutes of your time, so it's a no brainer.

Woah! Did they recently change the warranty coverage? The current warranty documentation on Toyota's website does not have the same text as shown here from April 2017. It differs a lot compared to what DriverSound posted. See below and link here: https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms-s/T-MMS-12Tacoma/pdf/2012_Toyota_Tacoma_WMG.pdf

My 2012 just failed at 59,000 miles and I'm up for the replacement too. I only displayed the P2442 code so looks like it might just be my valves? Either way I'm not happy, especially about Toyota wanting to charge just for the diagnostics. Going for the CA smog 7y/70k warranty if possible but doesn't look like that's going to happen according to this:

No I don't believe so, they changed the system to avoid this problem. They are designed to remove the moisture so the components don't fail.

You might get P2440 soon. I got 2440 a few days after I got 2442.

I'd suggest the BAFX Products 34t5 Bluetooth OBDII Scan Tool for $22
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NLQAHS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And the Torque App for your android device. I paid for the $12 of Torque, but I think you can check & clear codes with the free version.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irLUImwkKOc

For $34 you'll never have to pay for code reads, or even visit the mechanic.
