Personally I don't really like engine braking but that's because when I cruise on the highway, the engine starts slowing down as soon as I lay off the gas. Doesn't let me free roll and cruise.

But if it activates when pressing the brake pedal than that would be beneficial.

+1. In my experience this is made worse with 33" tires, and it's impossible to ignore. Really takes away from both the stock & OVtune as a whole, and in my experience Mat's maps keep fighting Toyotas logic for TC lockup. Also, while the significant lack of engine braking was welcomed at first, the truck upshifts almost immediately when throttle is let off. This gets reallllly irritating in stop and go traffic conditions for instance, because the truck will shift down from 4th to 2nd within less than a second, rpms bounce all over, and the inevitable TC lockup "bump" hits.

Power gains above 3000rpms are nice, and improved throttle is nice when the truck knows what to do with it. But there's a lot going on in these things that are not represented on the dyno. I'm not confident at this point that until more maps are "cracked" that this truck will act like it's not fighting itself. I hope I'm wrong!

What stops the truck from learning its way out of the tune?

Forgive me if thats a stupid question.

I don't think the truck is necessarily learning its way out of the tune, just that the items that aren't yet tuned are what are learned. I feel like that's a bad explanation.. @dYL0n help.

The truck does not “learn” it’s way out of the tune.

I think what people are feeling is the lack of newness.

Kinda how a lot of people didn’t realize this truck drives like shit on the test drive, too hyped up about their new truck.

Torque converter lockup is being/is worked on

I don't think it "learns it's way out of the tune", but the truck still "learns" even with the tune so the driving experience does change from an initial reflash. The tune (at least as far as I remember) changes the parameters in which it can "learn", but does not stop the "learning." Correct or did I miss something in one of these 337 pages?

Learned values like fuel trims, dynamic timing advance or retard, requested torque tables all build on top of base targets. Those base targets are the tune and won't change.

The feel of the vehicle will change from initial flash but nowhere near what stock feels like. Folks will get used to the power changes and may make comments akin to it feeling sluggish but I would challenge anyone making such a claim to flash back to their stock map, and then they'll realize they'd simply grown accustomed to power levels and saw a decrease in torque throttle response from the learning compared to fresh flash.

It's still never going to be as bad as stock. Not even remotely.

An interesting observation from this morning....

Today was the first morning it has been reasonably cool and dry. 45 vs 70. My truck with 1.02 was a completely different beast. It ran great before, but it is apparent now that weather affects these trucks a lot. It pulls like a mule through 3rd where before it would start to feel anemic above 2500.

Patiently waiting for the 87 tune so I don't have to fill my tank for the 3rd time this week with premium.

Weather has effected every toyota truck that i've owned. As soon as it gets below 70 they really wake up.

Yeah these trucks seem way way more suspectible to ambient temperature changes

I can't remember where I read, but this is due to the very high compression ratios of the motor.

And fuel... never owned a vehicle that is so picky about fuel from different stations. There are a couple in town that I used to use regularly but consistently make my truck feel "heavy" and depending on the additives from different brands there is a marked difference in the chirps. the Shell VPower 93 from ONE SPECIFIC station I have isolated minimizes chirps quite a bit. Seriously, I've never given a second thought to where I bought gas so long as it was a busy, clean place...

Here's what I understand about the problem: Direct injection engines are more susceptible to changes in humidity and temperature due to the nature of how they are making power. They run higher compression to make more power with smaller displacement because the fuel is directly injected to the combustion chamber, cooling the air on the compression stroke which makes it less detonation prone while also better atomizing the fuel for a better burn.

Saturate the air with humidity and higher temps and the internal combustion chamber temps don't drop as well, nor the fuel atomize as efficiently so it makes less power and it seems as though tunes have gotten a lot more aggressive on DA/Temp adjustments to ensure detonation is curbed.

These are the same problems you see with port injection engines but it seems more amplified on direct injection engines in my experience.

I have found that if I go to a gas station with a lot of business that better my performance. Just say "NO" to stagnant gas:tumbleweed:

I have found this as well. Temps dropped quite a bit between yesterday and today and you can feel the difference.

Just as a side note: Every once in awhile after coming to a stop the truck will dip from the normal 600-700 rpm idle to 500 rpm or so and shake a bit for a few seconds before it climbs back up into the normal rpm range. This happens maybe once out of every 100 times I come to a stop. Just wondering if any of you have had this experience as I have not until running version 1.02 of the tune. 2016 MT.
