For starters, replaced both front axle half shafts 1-2months ago. Had a leak where the axle goes into the diff, took it to a axle shop and they fixed the seals. I have 50k on the truck. ABS light came on 1 week ago.

So when the ABS light came on, and I needed an oil change, I decided to just take it to the dealer. They quote me with $159 to find the problem. Ok, a little high, but lets just see what they say. Get a call a couple hours later saying that it is the axle seal went bad and they will get it changed and will be good to go in a little bit, tell me it will be $330. Ok, not bad, dont have to do it myself, so whatever. Dont hear anything for a couple hours so I call back and ask whats up. They say that the sensor was bad so they need to order a new sensor, $230ish part. It will be ready fri (today) at 10. So the total now is $603. Ok, whatever, I just want my truck. So today I call at 9:40am and ask if my truck will be ready at 10am like they said. They tell me no, the sensor wont read something on the axle and they are trying to figure it out. They will call me when they have anymore info. Ok, well now I'm kinda getting a little curious. So I stop by there around 1145 to see if they have anymore info. They say that a foreign object broke the sensor and destroyed the seal. They also want to know if I can bring by the stock axles so they can compare them to the after market ones. So I bring the stock ones by a little later. Get a call about 530 tonight and they inform me that the wheel bearing is cracked and they dont know if that is what is causing the ABS issue, but it NEEDS to be replaced. Ok, so now he is questioning me about what I have done to my truck to crack the wheel bearing. He is stating that they are extremely strong and would take a lot of pressure to break them. I have not been rough on my truck by any means, I havent done any crazy off roading, no jumping or anything and I dont know what I could have done to break it. Anyways he says they wont be able to do anything until Monday because the tech people are gone and they cant get anymore info.

So now I am kinda pissed off, dont know at who or exactly what, but really bummed because I hate unexpected expenses. So has anyone ever had anything like this happen? How much should I expect to have the wheel bearing replaced? Is it something you need a special tool for or anything? I have to problem doin it myself if I can do it myself, is it possible?

I would probably talk to the first shop and see if they have any information that might be able to help you out at all.

I am deffinatley gonna ask to see the bearing. I just cant believe all this shit went bad at once. I do need to call the first shop. They showed me the sensor and it looked obviously wore down. But now since I am starting to get so many problems at once I am debating putting the truck back to stock and trading it in. Its kinda gettin to me right now.

Man that is shitty. I figured I would drop 1k on my sensor, and when I heard it was only 600 I was happy, now I figure its gonna be more.

sensor, you can buy the part and do yourself, it isnt hard, but since toyota has shitty axle seals and IIRC you need a press for the bearing id let toyota handle them

i take it back, i dont think you need a press for the bearing, i think that was the seal, but im not even sure of that....if you can browse an auto parts store for a haynes manual or something see to see if you are competant of doing it

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
May I just say something different. I think dealer is taking you to cleaners. My bet is that axle shop forgot or put wrongly C clip holding CV that will cause CV to move much more and cause ABS sensor to create faults + it will also chew the seal. If bearing was cracked you would have known (sound and feeling)

Oh hey, I would like to add cracked hub to the list too. Found that out today when I stopped by there to see what was up. I want to know what the hell I did to crack the hub and wheel bearing.
