Finally got to use this little guy today. Money well spent.

 

Ordered all my parts for the ECGS bushing install. Gonna change all the diff/transfer case oils while I'm at it.

Little nervous to do the ECGS install - trying it on my own and hoping for the best. I've also driven about 7500 miles with a vibe, so really hoping the CV is still in okay shape.

 

Try cleaning the throttle body also.

 

Picked up a set of OEM headlights just now for $100. Retrofits in the spring!

So I have been dealing with a mild clunk for a couple of years just as I start and stop. After my T-bone wreck (which should have totaled the truck if they knew about the axle) I had the entire axle replaced. Later I got the 4 leaf TSB done. My truck is stock height so nothing was changed from the suspension. I replaced the shocks since one side wore out early probably due to the wreck. I've tightened down all the U-bolts to factory torque as found in the manual. After all this I still had the "clunk".

After painting line up marks on the drive shaft, yesterday I decided that the play in my carrier bearing was more than I wanted and replaced it. I have about 115K miles. At the same time I carefully cut off the metal straps on the slip yoke cover and took that apart. I cleaned out all the old grease and replaced it with new grease. I put everything back together and attached the cover with 2 heavy duty about 3/8" wide zip ties. I put one connector on the right side of the shaft and the other on the left just opposite of each other thinking the it would help with the balance.

That did the trick. No more "clunk" and at 1-85mph it has no vibration - it never did. My biggest worry is the zip ties. I've only driven it maybe 25 miles but the zip ties are still tight. In 2 weeks I'll be heading back up to the Madison River so that should hopefully cause them to fail if the are going to. I'll pack extra ties with me for a bush fix if needed.

Has anyone tried something like a CVT boot strap on the slip yoke cover?
