I was reading a similar article somewhere a few months back when I was looking at a 2015. I don't think it is any area of concern unless it is really loud and just ya know, doesn't sound good at all. I remember another tech doing a carrier on a 2012 Tacoma at a shop I used to work at. That truck also had a lot of miles on it though.

For reference, I bought a 2016 6MT with 40k miles on it this week. It has BFG's on it, little knobby and also they are chopped up (needs rotation). When I got on the highway I thought I heard a hum. Stuck my head out the window and stepped on it. Honestly, I truly think my noise IS tires. I don't hear any rear end noise. My 4Runner has a big whine in the rear differential so I am aware of what I am looking for.

Has anyone actually had a rear diff fail on them yet? I didn't see any cases of that in this thread. Just curious if I missed one.

The independent shop called. They believe that the internal components of the differential are shot and need to be rebuilt. They've treated me right over the years and I trust them.

With that said, I don't have much that I'm willing to say in a public forum just yet. There will be at least one more call to Toyota Corporate and a visit to the local dealer before I do anything. Since no option is off the table, I need to watch what I say.

I'll report back just as soon as I get some definitive information and a solid game plan.

Wait wait. So they said what was " shot" specifically. Be cautious how you present this information to Toyota. Let them know NO repair work was completed. But the teardown was done by fully competent mechanics that specialize in differentials.

That's pretty much how I'm going to approach it along with written documentation from the independent shop.

Ring, pinion and pinion bearing. Basically everything which is why I used the term 'shot.' Too much slop in the setup and it'll eat itself alive over time, basically.

The white elephant in the room has been seen. Toyota needs to be put on blast for this. The more reporting of these issues they cant say its " normal". I was just reading that thread about the guy in Canada who's Tacoma, he was in 4x4 and going up a driveway and his differential exploded. Toyota tried to deny the claim. Then eventually loaded a new differential on a plane and flew it to Nova Scotia.

As a white person I find that statement extremely offensive. Why can't the elephant be yellow, orange or blue? How dare you be so insensitive to my self image.

Context is lost in typed exchanges. I hope everyone figures out that I was part joking and part commenting on the overly PC society that we live in all in a forum that has absolutely nothing to do with either.

... and white isn't the preferred nomenclature. European American, please.

Tacomas sell at a rate of about 200,000+ nationally, yearly. So YTD, there are over 300,000 2016+ Tacomas on the street. Statistically speaking, 3-4 reported failures here or let's say it's happened 25 fold, 100 times, we are looking at 1 of every 3,000 trucks or 0.0003% of the time.

    I'll take those odds.

With that said, I'm not happy I'm dealing with this, it is a new truck and these things shouldn't happen... but I'm also under warranty and have no reason to expect the worse as we still haven't heard of catastrophic failures in any medium, let alone, large numbers.

Coming here and raising a panic is not productive. Post the repair if you get it done, results and cost, if you are willing to share. I'd like to know how it turns out. I will do the same and hope others do also.

Thank you for sharing what you have already.

Wondering if anyone has tried going with a different oil like Amsoil or Redline, to see if the sound changes or even goes away.

I did, it is quieter with 80W-90. It was low when I checked before dropping the old fluid. No shavings outside of the expected upon break in.

Did it myself, took all of 45 minutes... dropped the spare tire and had plenty of room.
