Well, I finally broke down and bought a brand new hub for the OGT. Should be here Tuesday. Then I just have to paint it to match the other side and install it. Just have to remember if I painted it with Rustoleum flat green or Krylon. That last trip to Hardrock cost me about $300.

 

Haha the last trip I took to citrus left me with a stripped spindle... Now I'm over here trying to find someone who can re thread my current one. These trucks do nothing but cost money

So side note, if any of you know someone who can tap and re thread a cast iron spindle in the Gainesville and surrounding area I'd appreciate the info

 

I would imagine you could take it to a machine shop and have then ream it out and install a helicoil into it.

Quick Google search for machine shops in Gainesville returned this...

 

Hey no worries Lee. Was a lot easier than anticipated. Only trouble was a few stuck bolts.

 

I did mine by myself as well. Didn't ask for help though. Only time I really ask for help is when I can't physically do it alone, haha, like when I needed to put my transmission and T-case back in after I replaced my clutch (pulled it and installed the new clutch by myself) or when I had to pull the bed off to take the OGT over to Todd's to have some welding done. I dunno, I guess I feel like there's more pressure to get it done quick when people come over to help where as if I'm just doing it myself, I feel more relaxed and able to take my time...that and I can do it whenever I feel like it without having to conform to anyone else's schedule. That said, the help is immensely appreciated when I do ask for it.

My luck, nut holding my CV to my spindle is starting to round off. Gave up for the night and am gonna try again today with a better socket. Hoping this bitch doesn't shred to pieces. Otherwise I guess ill have to cut the nut off and buy another CV

I feel your pain, brah. Make sure you squirt that thing down with the pimp juice (50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone/Lacquer thinner). That shit works wonders, seriously.

 

Trying to decide if i want to come out or not

 

I've soaked it in PB blaster, closest thing I have readily available. I'm at a loss, as I just torqued it to 120 ft-lbs back in march when I installed the lift.

Screw a bunch of PB Blaster. It's got nothing on the ATF/Acetone mix...nothing you can buy commercially does really, but PB Blaster was well down the "most effective" list, behind Liquid Wrench and Kroil.

Here's a little something that might help all of you before working on rusted nuts and bolts!

"Machinist's Workshop" recently published information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for "break out "torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" bolt. Average torque load to loosen nut:

No Oil used ........................516 foot pounds
WD-40 ..................... ........238 foot pounds
PB Blaster .........................214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench ......................127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil .........................106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix...................... 53 foot pounds

The ATF/Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50/50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than anycommercial product in this one particular test.
Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it withequally good results. Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good asKroil for 20% of the price. ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a50/50 mix. ATF = Any type of Automatic Transmission Fluid.

This stuff really does work like magic. I was trying to break something loose--I forget ATM what it was, but I think it might have been my inner tie rod end--and it absolutely refused to budge even after using my full strength and a cheater bar. I decided to drop back and punt. I squirted it down with the ATF/Acetone mix and when inside to go to the bathroom. I grabbed a soda and cooled off for a few minutes and about 15-20 minutes later I went back out and tried breaking it loose again. To my complete amazement, the item broke loose so easily it was like it was already loose. I can't recommend the stuff highly enough.
