Back on TW and thinking new Taco????

Ok folks, so been a few years. But I'm debating trading my 2012 dodge 3500 Cummins with only 42k miles on it for a new Tacoma. Dealership has already offered me 40k for trade in so not too far off. Haven't found the one I want yet. Trying to get my hands on a TRD pro with a manual in cement grey. Used to have a 2010 dcsb trd. But since I only tow my toy hauler 18k lbs like ten times a year I figure I can buy an older diesel for those duties and get back into my comfy Taco.

So educate me, worth buying the trd pro? Or just spec out a trd OR and do my own suspension upgrades. Really want that leather interior. Below is the old Tacoma in Ouray Colorado

 

IMO, the pro is overpriced, but folks like them. I'd go OR and modify it.

What you and I want out of the truck may be different though.

 

OR. Then add Biltein 6112s with Dakars. pick you out a nice set of SCS wheels with your tire choice. Maybe pro grill. Hell of a lot better truck and still cheaper the the pro.

 

Definitely OR in my opinion. Save the 10k and use it to upgrade the suspension to King, Icon, OME, Dakars. Etc You'll have a better and more capable suspension than the Pro comes with.

Find you a TRD pro grille if you want one, and Clazzio leather seat covers are AWESOME! looks like factory leather. All this while still saving money.!

 

I would buy a TRD off-road, do the upgrades . I think you could have a better package with less money.

 

With the PRO you're paying for a suspension, sport hood, wheels, graphics, unique colors to the PRO, and lightly modified interior. Is the price increase worth it? Perhaps but only if it is to YOU. As many have suggested, I have a OR but if I had to do it again I'd probably have gotten a PRO or tried to get some mods worked into my deal. At the end of the day it's up to you OP if it fits your bill.

 

Heck, if your that close in price, hold out for the PRO

Cement gray will be all model available in '18. Folks who paid pro prices for the color only aren't going to be special anymore.

Yep, as others have already recommended. Assuming your usage actually requires upgrades.

Nice choices available aftermarket. Not worth having to buy a pile of stuff you may not want just to get that.

 

TRD OR + Clazzio Leather Seat Covers + Whatever other mods you want to do = Better choice than TRD PRO

 

You guys basically confirmed my thoughts. Now I just got to find a OR with a manual. Which seems to be damn near impossible. Had an automatic the last few trucks. Kind of wanting to go back to that 3rd pedal life.

 

I was the opposite, I came from a 6spd 2013 370Z and got a auto TRD OR, lol.

 

OP, i came from a King Ranch F350 into a tacoma and love it. Get the Trd OR!

 

if i were in your shoes i would do it in these steps...

1. Sell the current truck private sale if at all possible (steer away from family and friends as thats always a PITA if for some reason something goes wrong)

2. the extra money you get from private sale verses trading in could very well pay for that older diesel you want for the towing...

3. Skip over the TRD PRO unless you are heart set on badges and okayish suspension... you will more than likely upgrade over the stock fox suspension over time and in the end could have literally started with a base SR5 and do a full suspension, gears, arb lockers and maybe some armor and you would be right around the same price as the TRD Pro

4. start looking on here in the 3GEN for sale thread, there are a lot of good sales in here that have some good modifications started on the truck saving you even more money in the long run. Thats exactly how i got my truck, TacoMedic was selling his truck with ext travel kings, TC UCA, method wheels with K02's and soft topper etc overall saving me about $5K right off the bat!

It's up for sale on Craigslist now. No bites so far. However there is a new quicksand dcsb offroad with an automatic that's taunting me at the dealership right now.

 

Have you tried Autotrader? That's where I found my FJ when I bought it.

 

It looks like the 2018 OR may be available with leather as part of the premium package. Personally I'd wait/"attempt" to order one that way.

Not sure what your sales tax rate and rules in your state, but if you can get 40k trade in the tax benefit may actually cover the difference between trade value and private party.

 

I believe you can get an '18 OR in cement and with leather. You just have to wait a couple months.
