Its replaceable, just not very easy. Search on ih8mud for fj60 steering box reseal. That seal is teflon and takes some special or home brew tools.

FWIW, it's a yota IFS steering box from a 1st gen t4r... same process as the FJ60 box?

Pretty sure the boxes are basically the same, sector shaft is splined the same, just fj60 box is 4 bolt and forward swing.

I hear you. It never ends. Should be ordering my hydro assist this month sometime. Thinking of going with west Texas off-road hydro assist.

Kinda what I was thinking... thanks man. I'll give it a search

Got a long to do list for this truck. Just finished rebuilding the tranny. Need to replace the seals in one of my hubs, steering box, hydro assist, new shocks, need to fab a new rear bumper, need to fab a new front bumper, fab up new sliders, replace some TRE's, finish my electrical re-wiring, and a few other small items. Just need that DD so the truck can be down for a bit while I work on it...had a lead on a tow pig and DD but it looks like they fell thru...

Looks like the best option for the knuckles you have. I spent a lot more to have my knuckles machined for arms.

It is a problem with a manual, that's how I blew my trans. The seal started leaking between the crawl box and the trans, and it was venting gear lube from the trans into the cases. The cases were then venting fluid "normally" it seemed (anyone with duals know they leak a bit no matter what) and I deemed it normal. Over a few years the trans blew leaving a stoplight and it was dry.

Before every freaks out the same thing could in theory happen with the stock trans and tcase.

That's a common issue with land cruisers, the trans pumps its oil into the t-case leaving the trans under filled.

You can buy fill plugs that have a hose connecting the fill plug from the trans and t-case so the excess fluid can theoretically make its way back to the trans, but it's a band aid fix.

Ahh, I stand corrected then. I thought it was an issue with all of them.

I've had good experiences with low range offroad as well. Good customer service.

Atlas is a whole different league. The 4 speed version has everything contained within the same unit. So no need to sandwich parts with plates like you do with toyota parts. They also come already twin sticked with "real" twin stick function. Meaning, you can split your drive line between front and rear, each stick controls each axle independently from each other with Hi-N-Low in each stick. It's really cool.

I have the regular 2 speed with the 5.0 gearing. It's pretty darn low but obviously not as versatile as the 4 speed. However, I have a 5speed manual tranny, so that makes things easier. I think a 5.0 Atlas with an auto tranny would be way too low.

No doubt. People are running those cases behind V8s with tons of hp and torque, running the Hammers, etc.

darn toyota boxes seem to leak no matter what. Mine does as well.

I think double shear is the way to go with big ass tires. I was not aware of this option from artec industries. Their stuff is ridiculously well manufactured. I imagine this product is really good as well. Good customer service too.

My steering box doesn't leak actually. I was referring to my rear diff.

Pinion seal is easy to swap if you have a solid pinion spacer, its a bit trickier if you have a crush sleeve. The sealing surface is on the driveshaft flange, make sure you put some RTV on the pinion splines when reassembling.

Pinion seal leak is often indicative of pinion bearings going out, they start to allow the pinion to walk and the slop opens up the seal and allows oil to weep out, hopefully that isnt the issue considering your diff is new. You probably lost the spring on the inside of the seal, make sure you pack the new one with grease before assembling as it helps hold the spring in place.

Marlin makes an upgraded pinion seal that may be worth trying.

Pretty much what my dads building right now. 1 tons, 40s, ls, turbo 400 automatic trans with manual controls and an atlas all going under a jeepster lol. 4 link front and rear if it'll all fit if not a 3 link front 4 link rear. Coilovers all around. He's going all out on this one it seems and should be sweet when he/we finish it.

What would you like to know? :D

That will be a super bad ass rig. The LS/auto tranny combo with the Atlas will be amazing...and a killer suspension front/rear.

And so it begins. A very slow beginning.
