I FOUND BRAKES ON CRAIGSLIST, I NEED EXPERT EYES & OPINIONS

The rear brakes on Tacomas are drums, unless you have the rear disc brake conversion on your truck.

I knew I had drums in the back, was planning on doing the fronts

but they would still fit, i'd like to guess

 

Nope. Dead giveaway is that they have the wheel studs pressed into them and Tacoma rotors have holes for the studs that are pressed into the hubs to slide through.

 

The ones in the Craigslist like will not fit.

I'm planning on doing this as well. If decide to do this I can probably lend a hand given we have shared available times.

 

Do they have something like this for second gens?

 

I don't think that the bolt holes line up and the Tundra brakes aren't much larger than the 2nd gen's anyway. The biggest upgrade I got for my 2nd gen were stainless steel brake lines that made more of a difference in braking feel than new pads and rotors (Hawk HPS and Brembo).

I need to get longer lines and upgrade to steel. I had steel lines on my BMW and it made a big difference.

 

Maybe mine just need to be rebuilt, but they seem really weak.

 

Try some new brake lines before you do anything else and see what you think then...

 

rotor/pad type make a difference too. but yeah, steel lines will give you the best stopping power

 

wow, that's the same set for most Toyota trucks, except for the 95-04 Tacoma, haha

 

Negative, or at least not the biggest

2nd gen tacoma has 318mm rotor

One upgrade is 4th gen 4runner/ gx470 338mm rotor and 13wl calipers
Next upgrade is 5th gen 4runner/ gx460 338mm rotor and 14wa calipers (rotor is thicker and caliper has bigger pistons, 2-3mm can't remember)

Both are bolt on upgrades as long as you have 17" wheels, pretty sure it's bolt on for first gen as well.

 

well, that's still bigger than the 199mm Tacoma/v1 1st Gen Tundra and the 231mm v2 1st Gen Tundra

 

Glad people joined this discussion!! My brakes are still around 40% so I dont really need to do anything for the time being..

As for the Tundra brake upgrade, I'd need more clearance for the calipers than my 16" Welds allow.. 17" beadlocks in the future, possibly after I get closer to my desired 6" lift..
