For the most part I'm seconding @fdbyrne, I switched to 75W-90 severe gear Amsoil and it seemed slightly subdued. As my miles have increased, the sound has changed though; so no telling what changed it.

This has nothing to do with gear break in at the first 500? I was going to do that and people in here said " that's way to early. It'll be a waste". Before that milage it was quiet, no noticeable howl or whine. Maybe it was a missed opportunity to change the fluid.

Maybe it didn't matter anyways as the gears/ depth or backlash are improperly setup from the start.

    I'm at 1300 miles now.

It's not the gear oils fault... it's the bad setup. Once the gears settle into their "broken in" pattern, the noise develops. No amount of oil changes or overpriced gear oil at any interval is going to fix or prevent it.

500 miles is probably way too early for a break in change. In any case, I don’t think the issues have anything to do with specific fluid.

That said I’d change it sometime between where you are now and 5k miles. I waited until 10k and my fluid looked terrible. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-manual-transmission-6mt-fluid-change.481719/

So the comments are that the PROs don't have the howl, or not one PRO owner has come forward. I'm trying to sort out the differences between the two. The rear diff is the same, but the exhaust is different. The Toyota site doesn't help much...

My buddy, who works on big trucks, mentioned to me to think about the exhaust, that the issue MAY be there. This is all conversation, but have we looked into that? I had a friend that ALWAYS got a Flowmaster on ALL of his trucks when he got them, within 2-300 miles of new, haha... it was his thing, the only real mod he did, they always sounded nice... but I digress, anyone change the exhaust and have the howl still?

    Has this been discussed?

Would be great excuse to upgrade my exhaust... or at least a great excuse to get the wife to be cool with it... haha.

For the experts here, what are the differences between the OR/Limited trucks and the PROs?

I'm pretty confident it isn't exhaust. You can tell by the way the whine corresponds to wheel rpm vs engine rpm; the characteristics of the whine's pitch and amplitude are the same in 5th and 6th gears in my experience.

The best part is he's fucking up two different elephant sayings/phrases. A white elephant is usually in reference to a gift exchange where people give ridiculous, useless presents (typically around Christmas at work)...and the phrase "elephant in the room" which is in reference to something delicate that's intentionally avoided because no one wants to bring it up.im not really sure he used either of them properly which makes this all much more hilarious.

Please post pics of the gear set if possible. Can you ask them to do a mesh check with indicator compound?

I understand why you're asking for pictures, but I can't post them just yet. I don't exactly know where this is going yet, but it might involve litigation and if it goes there anything I type in a public forum is discoverable.

I still have to talk to corporate again.

Tolerances. A little + here, a little - there. Slap enough of these together you are going to get a few right. If the specs and the manufacturing / assembly were a helluvalot tighter you would have a whole lot more or a whole lot less with an issue. Slop in, inconsistency out.
