Sell it or Keep it I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO

ok guys I have an 06 AC, TRD OR and I love it...but heres the thing...I do a lot of work with it, Load it constantly. I have already put a small hole in my bed. Have replaced rear springs and airbags because i crushed the rear end with way too much weight. I have to occasionally shove 3 others in the AC with me to do a job.

So i was thinking going back to a 3/4 ton. I love them huge space, power, ability, But construction isnt my full time job, and most of the time I just commute myself.

I have my taco paid off, and I'd have to come out of pocket about 10G to get the bigger one.

I am also at the point where i need shocks, and brakes, and don't want to put money in if i plan to sell/trade at the end of the year.

I need some non bias opinions ( which is hard on a taco forum) but so far it has done ok for me, just wish it was bigger. I love oil burners, but they are expensive toys....

so what are your thoghts gents?

 

Keep it and buy something used for that 10 grand that you would have to fork out anyway. The used truck wouldnt be very new at that price but you could probably find something that better suits your needs. Look on the bightside, you will have something to mod the hell out of (your current Taco)

 

No it wouldn't. And it's my fault. I've always owned 3/4 and 1 tons and I have to remember not to treat the taco like that. I have a trailer too for the really heavy stuff I just get lazy sometimes. I like the tacoma, and I'm about to start the modding, but dont want to mod the hell of out something I don't plan on keeping. I can never make up my mind when it comes to vehilces

 

Sounds like you are pushing your rig WAY to hard with the stuff you are doing...You might like your truck but it's not up to the tasks you are trying to do with it.

Keep pushing it like that and you will have a bad failure at a bad time or your keep sinking money into it...and still wait a better suited truck.

It's a pain in the ass...but trade up to the right rig for the job.

 

Don't do that...It makes me feel dirty and uncomfortable.

 

Replace the Taco with a newer Taco and just get a trailer for hauling stuff for work. You don't need the big ass truck and you would tear up the Taco. A flat bed 6,000# capacity trailer is ~$1,500 or an enclosed trailer for $2,500.

I have seriously considered your dilema when I sold my fullsize truck and bought a dual axle car hauler with trailer brakes. Best thing I ever did.

 

If you need a bigger truck for work then get a full sized truck. If this is just a temporary thing as far as work and heavy loads then keep it because its paid off. But if you think you will be replacing more leafs and other parts in the future due to work then by all means get a bigger truck.

 

I have a 10K lbs car hauler that I use for the heavy stuff, I towed a caddy on it, and It went just fine. I was even thinking about getting a 16 ft enclosed and just stocking it with everything i need, like a mobile garage.
I do love the fact that It's paid off, and I could probably drive this thing another 5 years and have it still be worth 10G

 

man, car payments suck. tough call. maybe buy a used 3/4 ton, for close to the same money as the taco?

Do what fits your needs best..............whatever saves you money in the long run right now is what I would look at 1st..............

 

If you can have second truck I would go for it. With domestics buying new is a crazy thing to do, so may as well buy something cheap used just for work. It is still going to require repairs but then new domestics need repairs as well.

 

Trade it in for a new tundra, there doing some great incentives right now.

 

Payments, worse gas mileage, poor resale value due to excessive wear/tear on the new truck..I would at least fix your truck and run it to the ground before selling it and save some major cash and buying a good used work truck for 10K. Hate to see you get stuck in payments and their is a work downturn and have to sell the truck at a loss..

 

At first I thought keep it and buy another larger rig. Then I read on and see your going to be spending some major bucks to do some repairs.
I also read that you treat your truck like a truck. In other words you regularly abuse it.
If it were me, I think I would sell the truck and get something larger, more suited to the kind of work you appear to do on a regular basis. Doesn't have to be brand new either. Just in good shape and large enough to handle your abuse.
Just my thoughts.

 

I say keep this. Put the $ in to brakes/suspension and pocket the other money. If you can get by using this truck for construction once in a blue moon, there really isnt any sense in shelling out 10k for something else

 

But heres how I look at it. If you put less money in to maintaining something as opposed to buying something larger and more expensive, you're essentially creating overhead for yourself and the business/job.
Since he does beat the thing up, I dont see any good reason to sell this for a loss (ie: abused condition) to just purchase something else that'll wind up the same way.
I dont see many construction/laborers running around in new trucks. Most are using old, beat up vehicles that barely run, b/c in the end, its what gets you to and from the job.
I dunno. Maybe I'm talking in circles, but I just cant see spending 10 grand on a new(er) truck that'll wind up in the same condition as this one, which, even if its a little uncomfortable on occassion, still gets the job done.

 

Don't disagree. Just concerned that with the abuse he has already done that there might be something nasty looming underneath. Then there would be big bucks and a truck out of commission.
Maybe the best option would be to buy another used rig to beat up for the construction work.

 

Since your taco is an '06 and you like it. Fix it, mod it for wheeling on the weekends and spend $8k to get a used big truck. I saw several f350's in my area lately for about 7-10k. Beat the hell out of that and keep you taco for weekends and when you have time to have fun. Work truck and a fun truck.

Ok well I ran the numbers. And Yes, It would be EASIER to go get a new truck...like a ram 2500. If I get it used, will still cost me 10-15 out of pocket and that's annoying.

My truck doesnt Need any repairs, I had already repaired the rear springs and airbags, but I do need brakes and shocks. And Since I have no Payment....I did the math like this.

Option #1
Keep the taco, do the brakes, shocks and continue to maintain it, will cost me roughly $6,000 a year, with maintence insurance and based on the miles i drive fuel.

Option #2
I trade in the taco. get a nice ram diesel, will run forever I can get my faimly in comfy. I can get workers in Comfy. Will haul load and get beat to death very nicely BUT.....I will need to come out of pocket $12,000 w/the trade PLUS $1800 tax and reg fees....and with maintence on them being more, not much but still is...I did it like this

$13,800/6 (rough amount of yrs it will be a good DD)=$2300 + $4500 fuel+$1800 fuel and Maintence.=$8400 a year. So it will cost me an aditional $2500 a year for 6 years...

despite it would be easier to drive the big boy. My truck is still alive and well and Although it is awful stuffing 2/3 grown men in the back of an AC, for $2500/yr they can be uncomfortable for a while.

Option#3
Is essentially take the $2500 I'd save for the first year in keeping the taco, Sell my car Trailer ( i rarely haul cars, but like being able to) and get a 12ft enclosed trailer, outfit it with shelves, bins, racks, and make it a rolling garage.

I would like to be more comfortable, but for the most part, its just me in my truck, Until my daughter gets bigger and needs a back seat itll due. And it only has 56K on it. So even in 3 years, when it's got 115K it will probably still be worth $10,000 and then just get something a few years old, but bigger.
