What's the chatter on the 2018's?

Anyone seen the rather silly 17 minute and change "commercial-Ad-Not sure what else to call it" bit with the 2018 Tundra/4Runner/Tacoma shooting through Vietnam on YouTube posted by GT Riders today? Not sure if this same video has been broadcasted on any other channel or not.

At 11:20 in, it has a good shot of the rear of the Taco with the tail lights on. Can anyone tell if it's sporting LEDs back there?

 

The current Pro Grille already has a section boxed out which I believe is for that Safety Sense Stuff, seems as if they planned ahead during the design phase.

How do we know it the truck is an '18?

 

Agreed. This was published by Toyota in April of 17 originally. I think someone just re-uploaded the video with 2018 in the title to get some clicks. Also, I didn't think they were doing a TRD Pro Tundra in '18.

 

Agreed. It’s not. This was posted last year. They just changed the title to 2018.

 

If anyone gets a chance to check out the ‘18 Tacoma at the Texas state fair I would be curious what Toyota states regarding the rear diff. issues. Are they resolved in the 2018 based on the ‘16-‘17 TSB?

Would also be curious about a couple of smaller details on the ‘18. Is the rear tailgate lock now electric and work with the cab locks? A friend of mine has a ‘16 Tacoma and I couldn’t believe the tailgate lock is only manual.

Also with Entune 3.0 does that mean remote start with the factory key fob will be an option from Toyota?

The consultants were very nice, but could not give me any information that we weren’t already aware of.

They had a “confidentiality” document, but wouldn’t let me see it, but again, told me nothing that we already didn’t know.

“There’s absolutely no reason we couldn’t have a hybrid truck,” he said. “All those options, we’re exploring. When you’re trying to raise [corporate average fuel economy] limits for the entire brand, there’s no option that isn’t on the table.”

He didn’t say which truck might get a hybrid variant, but did say the Tacoma would be getting powertrain upgrades in order to stay competitive.

“We’re going to continue to work on all the improvements that are going to be necessary to keep Tacoma at the top of the class. So powertrains are obviously a big piece of anyone’s equation as we work on CAFE standards.”

 

Other countries must think were idiots, those people in the fields are looking at those Toyotas and the red white and blue choppers like WTF

 

That is why I asked about the possibility of Toyota using an 8 speed for the 2018 model along with getting the power increases the other Toyotas have gotten with the same engine. Toyota knows they need to up their game if they want to stay competitive when they know the Ranger, Jeep truck, new Frontier, new Hyundai truck, etc. are all just around the corner. Not to mention the Chevy/GMC variants that already have more power and better transmissions and an off road model that is more capable with a front locker that is not available on the Tacoma Pro model.

When do you think an all battery powered Taco will come out? Isn't it inevitable? I'm thinking within the next five years, maybe sooner, we'll have one.

I must admit that I'm a gas loving truck user (mpg be damned!), and have a hard time with the thought of a battery powered one. A guy at work has a Tesla, and I must say it's pretty impressive. He punches the pedal, and it snaps your head back into the seat.

 

I must say, I like the look of the cheese grate grills on the '16-'17 TRDs, but not the ones on that cement '18 that was pictured. With all the safety sense stuff coming on the '18s, can the older grills just be swapped out with the new? Sure I could get the Pro grill since it seems to be future proofed for safety sense, but since the standard cheese grate grills aren't popular anyways, I'll assume they'll be plenty of those on the used markets.

 

A battery system will give people the low-end torque they want. This is why diesel railway locomotives don't use transmissions, but instead burn deisel fuel to generate electricity for electric motors between the wheels. An electric motor is at its highest torque before it starts moving (perfect for getting trains rolling). The same is not true of a direct-driven system with an engine and transmission. The electric taco may be the best taco yet.
