looking to quiet down/remove rasp from 4cyl exhaust

Truck is a 2016 access cab. I know that the stock truck is already rather quiet, but I'm pretty particular in exhaust noise as I can't stand raspiness and rattles. Yes its a truck I understand that, but I think there could be some improvements.

So I was wondering if anyone has done any work as far as resonators and new mufflers to remove some of the annoying sounds. Plus I feel like removing the extremely large muffler would help out. Thanks

 

The rattles have more to do with how the exhaust is mounted... the rasp you can change but know that if you restrict it more you will be making the engine work harder

 

dynamat the interior and heat wrap the exhaust
should help deaden some sound i imagine
sounds are vibrations, control the vibrations control the sounds

 

I’m assuming you have the stock muffler. I actually had a flowmaster delta 50 and hated it. Went back to the stock and seems fine now. Never really had gave some thought to make it quieter. It’s a big 4 cylinder. My old v6 was the same size so not sure if there’s anything you could do to lower the sound.

You can install the LCE header and not have to rev up to 4K to get the same power so maybe that would help? Doesn’t hurt to have the extra power either.

 

True but it would make it heavier and costly. I like the exhaust wrap option

 

I was thinking about wrapping it as I used to have wrap on my subaru's borla header due to it being thin wall tubing and that got rid of the tin sound it produced. I just wasn't sure if anyone had messed around with a different variation of muffler and resonator setup. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into some changes

 

I installed a resonator in my LCE catback. It did a lot to quiet it down and get rid of the drone. I don't know how much it would do for the stock exhaust but you could give it a try.

I legit had that exact resonator on my subaru's midpipe and it made the exhaust that much better, hence the reason I brought up this thread! I actually still have my exhaust from that car and contemplated cutting and making it work as it is a 2.25" exhaust so it would all work. I just don't want my truck to sound like an import car, hence why I'm not 100% set on going into a full exhaust & headers

 

I wanted the extra power, so I'm running the LCE header and LCE catback exhaust. Originally, I was going to go with the Magnaflow catback. It was out of stock when I ordered, so I went with the LCE. It still uses a Magnaflow muffler. The cat pipe is the only stock part of my exhaust.

I wouldn't say that my truck sounds like an import car, but the setup when I first put it on was just too loud and it droned at 70+. I'd get headaches after driving 1.5 - 2 hours. I put in the resonator hoping that it would tame the exhaust, which thankfully it did.

 

Removing the muffler will not make your truck quieter.

OEM Toyota muffler and a resonator placed under the cab. Vibrant performance has a stainless steel resonator that can be installed before the muffler that should fit your needs. Just be sure you know the pipe size. FYI Toyota pipes are stainless steel. I am not certain if they are 304/316 or the common 409 stainless. 409 stainless rusts after roughly 10 years.

 

Hey I’m in a similar position. My 2.7 with magnaflow muffler sounds a bit ricey at high rpms and has a drone on the highway between 65-75. I like the idea of trying a resonator but I’m afraid it will add to much resistance to the exhaust flow, making my engine work harder. Have you and any issues with your setup or ever hear of this? Thanks

 

A straight through resonator should add little to no add exhaust flow restriction. They're a perforated pipe on the inside with some sound absorbing material packed around it and the outer body.

 

One of these welded inline before your factory muffler would work good. I have used them in the past with good results. A longer case one (18"-24") works better as a resonator.
