Hello guys I have been a member on this forum for a while but have hung out on the generation 1 forum. My son totaled my 2001 Tacoma and wanted a full size truck. I have always wanted another Tacoma and I purchased a 2007 v6 double cab automatic from a guy who has owned it since new. He had a 3" rough county lift added in 2010. Nothing has been done to the truck outside of oil changes. I got the truck home last night and changed the oil, filter and put on the pro comp xtreme MT/2 tires LT 285/70R17 with fuel wheels. These tires and rims where on my sons 2001 when it was totaled so we took them off. Truck had no issues on stock 16" rims with bald tires on the drive home. Man that thing buck and shook like I was holding a 60 pound catfish. Quick question to you guys. I have read 10 pages on the tire shake. I am taking these rims and tires into a shop that will road force balance them. Does anybody know what hub centering rings I will need? I hope that by now someone has a part description on what to order for a 2007 V6 auto double cab.

The second question is what axles replacements do you guys recommend? Believe it or not but I never changed an axle out on my 2001 and put 300,000 miles on it. After crawling up under truck I saw where both axles boots are torn. Thanks RIck

I'd start with a tire balance

    then alignment

and then if it's still there, move on to tie rods and ball joints

and the only other thing I can think of is "could the wheels / tires have been damaged when your son totaled the truck?"

I will drop the tires off to get them road forced balanced tomorrow. I will explain to them they were in a wreck so maybe one of the rims are warped but they will know to check for that. Then I will go with an alignment. I know the person that owned the truck hasn't done anything to it so I will check out the tie rods and ball joints this weekend.

You can see in one of the pics my sons 2006 GMC. He is so wanting to drive this Tacoma to school. I ask him many times to get another Tacoma and he wouldn't have it. As soon as we took the jack out he and his girlfriend climbed in to drive and he came back and told me about the shake. I was really giving him a hard time last night at dinner and he said Dad I really don't want that Tacoma over my GMC and I said just wait.

Hub centric rings, while making life a touch easier, are not needed if care is taken when mounting the wheels.

I changed from steer tires/wheels to race tires/wheels once or twice a month for 2-3 years (not Tacoma!) and the race set was not hubcentric. Never had an issue at any speed

I'd not tell the Road Force guys about the accident in advance. You don't want to give them an easy out if they are hard to balance. If they do it right they'll find any problem on their own.

Ok will do and thanks for the heads up. Now I got to go and figure out that mod to take out the low tire light.

On your half shafts I would just get new boots and re-grease the joints.

I don't have a machine to apply the metal band to the boot. Believe me I would love to stick with OEM on half shafts.

Another question. Since I have a 3" lift and no shake with current bald tires and factory 16" rims. could I not get some Tacoma 17" rims and use them since they are made for tacoma. I honestly don't need those big tires but would want to fill up the wheel well. so thinking 17" rims and maybe some a/t tires if these don't work out. Will rims in the 2005--2011 interchange?
