Have you checked ECGS to see if they can build you something stronger?

What was the setup and how did you break it?

May be time to step up to a bigger diff.

Options are limited for strength upgrades without going larger. Check out gearinstalls.com. Zuk knows how to set up diffs for max strength. A proper install, solid pinion spacer, and chryo'ing the gears is pretty much all you can do.

Locked rear end + sudden traction. Differentials don't like it. That's why if you're stuck its not wise to spin the tires like crazy. Not saying that's what happened here but its one way to possibly do it.

First one blew stuck in clay and this one blew cause I gave too much throttle in 2wd over big log and log shot out and tires were spinning when they hit the ground

This is the usual killer of diffs locked or unlocked, excess wheel spin with sudden traction.

Would it be made more likely though by locking the rear? Since the wheels are getting equal power and not having it split up like an open diff would? I could be wrong, just figured it would make matters worse.

Swap in a truetrac to the 8.4. Way better than an open diff, but depending on what wheeling you do may not be as ideal as a locker.

    8.4 isn't much upgrade over the 8".

If you can find a 9.5" land cruiser diff/ housing you can use the part of the housing that holds the diff and ~12" of axle tube on either side. You then cut the axle tubes off of your stock axle and (on earlier housings at least) slip fit the tube inside the land cruiser tube. End result is a 9.5" third member with tacoma shafts and brakes. Even better would be to find a 4th gen 4Runner axle for the disc brakes.

Sell the elocker to recoup some cost.

What part is incompatible? A stock part can be made to fit as long as you have the right peices.

8.4 diff wont fit in 8" housing, the entire housing has to be swapped.

Just look at the build thread
Swap to an 8.4 with an ARB. Should be easy to find an 8.4 out of a similar model truck and should be a direct bolt on. I know several people that went through multiple elocker diffs. They swapped to 8.4s with ARBs and no more problems.

Right. He said he found an entire housing with an 8.4 diff. Full swap, not an 8.4 diff into a 8 housing.
